Tha rear passenger side door on my '03 model L322 won't open electrically. That is the button does not come up. However it locks ok. Before I start the process of dismantling the door, what could it be. The mechanism seems ok in that it locks. You can hear the solenoid operating. Jim

Hi Jim,
Would love to be able to offer copious pearls of wisdom here. Regrettably (or not) I've not had any trouble with mine.
I would check that it actually is locking or unlocking of course, by checking that you can open or not despite the little button not popping up.
Can you open the door with the internal latch or the external latch? If so, the mechanism that moves the button might just have become misaligned. This is no big deal as you can open or close the door anyway.
I've always wondered why they even put it in a modern car, with remote locking, anyway. Possibly just as a visual indicator that the door is unlocked. It just ticks off my girlfriend because she keeps locking herself in by leaning her elbow on the button accidentally.
If the solenoid works to open and lock despite the button, ignore it. If not, get a new solenoid, and start dismantling the door.
So, there you have it, my 2c worth.
I might also suggest have a bit of a search both here and some of the other forums. Someone around the world has probably had a problem sometime. It's not a major thing to change the rear door solenoid from what I can see of the mechanical structure, just time consuming.
Cheers,
Iain

I rebuilt my lock actuator based on this guide for a Discovery II. I reckon yours has the same problems:
Door lock actuator Rebuilt - Land Rover Forums : Land Rover and Range Rover Forum (http://www.landroversonly.com/forums/f40/door-lock-actuator-rebuilt-51914/)
It is a fairly time consuming but satisfying job, you will probably break some of the clips around the mechanism, but there are enough screws to hold it anyway.
One of the little motors that locks the door gets all full of carbon, you have to clean it out and then it works. I recommend that you take photos as you take it apart so that you can see the location of the arms and gears. I fixed mine about three months ago and it has worked perfectly since.

Thanks guys. I am wondering if I should disconnect the battery as my L322 has airbags in rear side doors. I believe there is a securing screw under the airbag cap. Jim

I am fairly sure that early l322s don't have airbags in the rear doors, but it might be a good idea to disconnect the battery anyway. It is a good habit to get into whenever doing anything that involves unplugging electrics.

Look around, I just picked one up off British Parts UK for 47 pounds in a larger order of filters and freight adding another 30% to the price but still a good saving on local cost. Where the cost of local is reasonably competitive, I will buy here. But I don't like to feel abused. :o

Ok so I am assuming that the cable has become detached from the inner door handle, so the standard one pull to unlock and then another to open does not work.
Try pulling up the black lock knob on the top with tweezers and pulling on the outer door handle at the same time.
If none of these work because they are disconnected then pull the window down and go fishing with a piece of hooked wire to pull the lever that is connected to the outside handle.
