Question for the green thumbs

Next to my pergola is a space about 400mm wide and 9m long it doesn't really get any sun and the soil/clay is ordinary so my q is to as what plants would suit as Im looking to put Some plants in and then put a river pebble around it, something hard to kill would be good I'm not good with gardening

If I have the choice I will go for a Plumeria ( Frangipani).

Do you want something to look nice or to cover a wall? I have no idea how your place looks like, but one of my favourites is Russian Vine. Growing like mad, covering up almost everything, and very tolerant. Just some water every now and then if it's too dry. Just looks plain green, though, no fancy flowers.

I have a similar place down the side of the house and find grevillea do very well in our climate. Keep them pruned up and can even be hedged. Pretty cheap to pick up too. I get them from the local markets.

Jasmine will one plant to cosidering.
Grevilleas become brown when not exposed to the sun.

Another option would be a bougainvillea. It is vivacious green most of the 11 months of the year.

Sounds like a location where a ground cover of Concretus Romanus would do well.

There's an excellent book called "Grow what where" ...don't know if it's still in print ..could get it possibly from a library. ...

I had a quick look for heavy/clay soils /pebbles on top - and growing to less than 1m tall which also means they are less likely to 'spread' to far either....

There are several varieties of Acacia, Boronia, Callistemon and Grevillea which may be suitable... You'll need to be careful also to avoid thorns etc. especially if people are walking past or might brush against them. Also for general maintenance!!

I'd recommend asking questions at a good nursery..;)

Went with Tuscan toppings and Daphne's in large 1m high pots, came up great

Everyone is offering you shrubs and trees, but if you want low plants to put pebbles around then take a look at the bromiliads and several of the aloe vera plants.....they look good in a pebbled garden......you might even go for some cacti......

I'm with ramblingboy42 on this, the type of bromiliads you need are guzmanias, these are a soft leaf type, come with an amazing range of flowers, grow them in pots, plant a variety of ferns in amongst the pots, a place of beauty.
