Article in Sept. issue of Land Rover monthly, Upfront News, - " Sources in Thailand claim that LR.is planning to build the next generation Defender in the S.E. Asian country. Carsanook.com. , which claims to be' Thailands on- line car magazine ' says it has spoken to industry sources who claim the company is planning to open a factory near the deep sea port in Laem Chabang on the eastern province of Chon Buri.
According to those sources, the plan is to use the Thai Kingdom as a regional production hub for right hand drive versions of the Defender, with an initial production of 500/ year for local markets. The factory would assemble Defenders from completely knocked-down kits , shipped from the UK . LR are attracted to Thailand because of the extensive parts supply network, and the favourable tax laws for commercial vehicles." Land Rover refuses to comment on the rumours. Bob
