I need to buy some more toys, Anyone had any experience with these?
ROSSI 4 IN 1 AC/DC TIG INVERTER WELDER, PLASMA CUTTER | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ROSSI-4-1-AC-DC-TIG-INVERTER-WELDER-PLASMA-CUTTER-/130578598325?pt=AU_Welding&hash=item1e671749b5)
I was going to buy a plasma cutter, but my brother wants to go halfs so he can play with alloy intakes and plenum chambers for turbocharged stuff

There was a stand selling CIGweld MIG/STICK/TIG welders for $1000 at the Murrunmbateman field days. They came with a free TIG torch as well.
Not sure they will do AC TIG for aluminium though.

Needs to be AC for ali. AFAIK the HF is just for starting.
I've got a cheapie chinese inverter AC/DC, TIG/MMA/PLASMA.
Its a Mitech brand.
Had it for a couple of years and no dramas. Only done a few test welds on aluminium, but have done a decent amount of DC TIG on mild steel.
Stick side is brilliant. Played with the plasma - good for thin stuff but haven't had much luck with 6mm+. Operator issues me thinks :D
Having to remove the TIG torch to fit the cutting one is a bit of a PITA.
When I researched before I got it, the biggest thing with the Chinese stuff seemed to be build quality issues. The advice was to open it up before even turning on, and make sure everything is secure and nice.
Good advice for mine, as one of the control boards was on barbed plastic standoffs and had come adrift. Probably would have been ugly had I turned it on.

Hi Matt , I 've never had anything to do with the Brand "Rossi" , one thing to look for with these welder is their Duty Cycle :) HF when welding in AC mode Just stablises the Arc at the Zero points on the sign wave.

True but how much work do you do,it's seems your always doing something so why go cheap?.Look at it another way,if things get tight a name brand will return it's value where's a chinese one will be worth nothing.Having used cheap welders on site there's nothing worse than getting a nice bead happening only to have the thing overheat or have a hissy fit,or a crappy compressor that runs out of air two thirds through a cut. Bought one last year and it cost about $1300 for all the same kit...was a good deal at the time.
I am new to welding but was able to master the stick side sufficiently to build a camper which survived a Cape York trip without any drama.
I've only fiddled with the TIG doing "exercises" to improve my technique before attempting something substantial ... Have had no reason to try the plasma cutter as yet.
A mate who is a professional welder has used it (stick) and was most impressed with the options to tweak the settings to improve the weld.
It came with a 15A plug so I made up a short converter lead to run it off a standard powerpoint for low settings on thin walled (3-4mm) RHS.
As long as you respect the duty cycle it's an excellent package...

Mine is the diesel one too,USA Spliters.
A WORD OF WARNING.
I spoke to a bloke who re-built the side-shift ram on my grader.
The rams on all the imported splitters do not meet australian standards, they are made from normal mild steel tubing which is not up to the job of the hydraulic pressure being applied. He has seen several that have burst open.If you put a gauge around the ram body they swell under load.
DONT SPLIT TOUGH/TWISTED WOOD,THE RAM IS A TIMEBOMB TICKING AWAY!!!!
Love the job it does, shame its not what was advertised.

I see what your saying Pat, I only was buying a plasma, only to cut light steel just for a toy, my brother wants to play alloy, sure I'll dabble, but this is one of those things that won't make money, hence the tight ass option, also it's his pay when I pay cash, which I get gst back and tax deductible, so not a huge worry, if it returned financially I'd spend big

I have like 100m of plantation manna gum, with more plantation blue gum coming, hoping to have atleast 20 years of wood in the next year or so and it's easy on the splitter, my old boy does some old growth stuff, but anything to nasty can be ripped with a 066, none of that wood porn you call jarra:(
Oh and a mate of mine is a hydraulics mistro, so what fails will be overkilled

May be rubbish but sounds the goods. I never went to welding school just learnt from some fine welders. Yes HF is just for starting when doing aluminium with TIG. You can get the arc started long before you get the tip close to the work and it all goes smoothly from there. With no HF it is difficult to strike an arc without the tip sticking to the work. Obviously not available with mild or stainless TIG welding as you use DC then but still have to watch the tungsten tip does not stick starting the arc.

i just bought a rossi cut 40 plasma, just to do some body work on the EH.
the rossi is $499 and 12mth warrenty the exact same thing from BOC, the BOC cut 40.... is over a grand, again with a 12month warrenty.
so far the rossi has cut 150mm of 1.2mm before it died:(
but at least i didnt spend a grand and possibly have the same outcome?
you win some you loose some.
another one is being sent.

Stay well clear of chinese TIG/stick/plasma gear, trust me!:( I have a very expensive stick welder, the only part that works (for the moment). I opened it up and could not get over the crap workmanship inside. Save up a bit more and get something made in Europe, you will have no grief andwill probably hand it down to your Grand Kids.

Just a suggestion.... Visit a couple of welding supply shops, and price out what you get for your $ in the European and other 'brand-name' stuff...
Sure, the chink stuff is still cheaper, but THAT much less ?

My brother in law who is a welding teacher at tafe and has all the high pressure etc tickets purchased a cheap chinese jobbie 3 years ago and it has done a heap of work, some of the projects include 2 caravans, a slide on camper, my ali roof racks and storage boxes and the list goes on. It has had a few moments that he has been a little frustrated with it but said he would buy the same again.
cheers
