View Full Version : Now this is just weird!

I left my 2001 HSE locked overnight (immobilized), next morning I could hear an error message sounding while it was still locked.
Tried to unlock using the remote with no luck.
When I put the key in the drivers door and turned, the bloody thing started on it's own!
My face must have been priceless!
I put the key in the ignition and it stopped again.
Been completely normal since.
Any suggestions as to what might cause this to happen?

That would have freaked me out. It's going to be tough waiting to see an explanation for this....

Wwooooo wwooooo
Shhhhh did you pay extra for that self starting system??
Wow I think you might have a big BECM gremlin or a wire rubbed through.

I'd say low battery.

Hi PeterH
That would be caused by an aberration of flip flop logic. ;)

Thanks for the responses gents, yes I was suspecting a becm issue, but it has been perfect since.
It does have a newly rebuilt alternator and new battery, maybe I should check the battery terminals for tightness.
I have experienced weird things happening before when the battery is low.
Hrmmmm.
I will get the faultmate out and do a check to see if that uncovers anything.
Will keep you posted.

My bet is dodgy contact in the steering column where the key goes in.
Error message was probably the good old "key in ignition". When you inserted the key, it closed the contact and engine started.
Put some wd-40 or carbon down the barrel... or hire an exorcist.
Cheers, Paul.

I reckon you are on the money Paul, will try some graphite powder in the ignition switch.
Has not done it since, but definitely worth a shot.
Cheers, Pete.

yep graphite powder is the go, not WD40. There's a TSB on the "key in ignition" syndrome somewhere (hmmm there's always a TSB on something of interest somewhere!!:)

Fair comment. I tend to think of WD-40 and/or Windex as the fix for almost anything ;)
