275/70/18 Cooper S/T Maxx ???

Hi everybody!

This is my first post on this forum.*

I am trying to find out if anyone has succesfully put on tires in the size 275/70/18 on their Discovery3?:o*I know it's a big tire but that is the only size available in 18", of the new Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx!!!:)

What mods are we looking at, to make this tire fit?:twisted:

Definitely modifications required!
Standard tyre is 766mm OA approx.
275 / 70 R18 is 842 OA!

Is the D3 going to be road legal?

It is to be used both on and off road, more or less road legal...

I belive that 33" is no more than max 838 OD?! and most often only 32,4".

The 275/70/18 is something like 33,15" - even more than "Roveribis" 33"!!!

I have recently needed to replace my 18" Pirelli Scorpions and had my heart set on the new Coopers ST Maxx (after reading the fine reviews). The guys at Goodyear Auto Centre Canberra had recently fitted a set to a D3 Owner who subsequently turned up a week later with guards and wiring torn out. He responsibly refused to sell me a set!

After more research I settled on a set of General Grabbers AT2's 255/60R18 (Which was my second choice after the ST Maxx's). Ordered a set only to be called 3 days later saying the AT2's have been replaced with the new GG AT's (which are really AT3's but their marketing dept has reverted back to the AT name). A completely different tyre.......

So....After some more research it appears the new GG AT's are an improvement in every aspect of the GG AT2's......So I bought them.

It seems General Tire has seen a market for a good AT tyre in the large diameters and have an excellent range in 18, 19 & 20" variants in standard and LT.

Had them for 3 weeks now and extremely happy. They have the aggressive look I was after, but are as quiet as the Scorpions (tested with a phone decibel tool before and after), Fantastic wet performance....struggled to get the tyre to lock up on a greasy road and I took them bush on gravel roads and a few steep climbs over the weekend.....amazing; the traction control only kicked in once in one place where the old tyres were constantly relying on the cars technology before; and I had to check myself several times as I was feeling over confident driving on the gravel...it felt like I was still on the black top!

Overall, I'd be recommending these to anyone who wants to listen. I didn't get the LT version as they are still to be released but could not wait as the old tyres were past there safe level. For $300 per corner an excellent choice and a big saving on the Coopers LTZ's I was quoted as an alternative.

The Scorpions have been great and after reading the recent 4WD Action review (They came first) I considered getting another set.....I got over 60K out of the set but they were just to..... dull....I was stuck in a paddock a while ago up to my belly with all 4 wheels spinning. The mate who came and dragged me out looked at the tyres and said I needed real mans tyres....with chunky bits around the edges, deep tread and stuff:D

I really wanted something different because I could.....I'd still get stuck in the same paddock with the new GG AT's but they do look more offroad and more all terrain.....and I do use my vehicle regularly off the black top.

So it simply because I wanted a change.

Hi Col,
I thought a change may have been the case.
I have done 45K on my 19" Pirellis so far and have been very happy with them.......mind you, I have a second set of rims with MTR tyres for off road.
When the Pirellis wear out, I'll probably opt for a set of 18" rims through Gordon (GOE) and go for a more aggresive road tyre.

What options do we have, for some other great AT/MT tires, in the size of 285/65R18, 275/65R18, 265/70R18 - something like 32,5"?

On a D3 ..........

265/70R18: won't fit without extreme modification

285/65R18 (won't fit without a _lot_ of work): Interco SS-M16, Nitto TrailGrappler, BFG AT, Hankook AT

275/65R18 (won't fit without a bit of work): Maxxis Bighorn, Hankook MT, Dunlop Rover MTTMAX, Goodyear MTR Kevlar, Cooper STT

285/60R18: Cooper Zeon LTZ, Nitto AT, Procomp AT, Falken AT, Dunlop Grandtrek AT3

I will be using some kind of a 2" lift and wheelspacers if needed. I am not affraid of other resonable modifications - the D3 will mainly be used for off road traveling and not for daily use.

I really do want something in the size about 32,5" OD. :twisted:

On a D3, why aren't you fitting 17" rims? I used to run Interco Super Swamper Radials in 265/70R17. They were oversize at 32.5", I used a 2" lift (didn't require spacers). A specialist tyre, but very strong, probably the highest traction tread you'll get for mud/rocks. But very noisy and heavy!

If your D3 has Terrain Response and air suspension I am not sure how easy a 2in lift and spacers is going to be.

If is one of the earlier S models with Coil suspension the that is a different matter.

I am sure it can be done and has been done but if you checked out the link to "roveribis" on the Disco3 UK forum you will see he had to make chassis mods to fit those size tyres on and they still rubbed.

Someone with greater knowledge than me will provide the correct advise but thought I would start it off.
