Anyone else have an issue with their Gammy Left Knee, I find I can only go for an hour or so in Low Range before I get acute knee pain & have to stop for a rest. A Legacy of working for Telstra for 30 years under houses & in roofs.
Never had the problem with Landcruisers which have car - like clutch pedal, could drive all day in the slow going stuff.
I read about putting a Tdi pedal spring in but I cant see that will help much,
anyone tried a Red Booster

If nothing else it will put the Clutch M/C in an easy place to change out !!
or will this take away my 'only real men drive landrovers' status

I have no experience with the red booster but its not the only way.

Seems a bit easier and is suppose to be a good modification

Hi,
Some of the old series landys had an in-line vacuum booster that could be retrofitted to this application very nicely, then you could mount it were ever you like.
My work truck has a 4.2 diesel four in it with a power assisted clutch and its very light, I think it will do the business for you.

I did this mod to my 2002 td5 110 when i first purchased it.
Removal of the long pedal return spring and replaced with the torsion spring.
The slot is already there on the back of the clutch pedal for the torsion spring.
Easy job and does make quite a big difference.
Funnily enough my 95 Tdi Ute already had this spring as standard.
So I don't know why the td5 didn't........
Cheers,
Paul.

This is overkill and not a sensible solution just yet but worth bearing mind: I drove my mate's 110 ute again last weekend and the heavy duty clutch is an absolute joy, soft yet "all clutch" & responsive. I wish I'd known about them when I did mine about 100k ago. I'm almost (almost) looking forward to needing to do it again so I can put this HD clutch in

Try some of the simpler solutions sugested here before going to the trouble and expense installing a booster coz when the time comes to do the clutch, you'll have some options which will make your life easier I believe.

Thanks guys,
Have ordered said spring kit,
may be avaliable locally but I could only find online at
Land Rover Defender Clutch Pedal Modification Kit at www.rimmerbros.co.uk (http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-LR1152)
Re VH44 Booster that is an option, you can still buy them new $295
but nowhere obvious to mount it underbonnet that will get in the way of working on other stuff.
Paul, has anyone told you that you look like Nigel from the Young Ones !!

Funnily enough, 100% of all Td5 Defenders we have replaced the clutches in have been way easier to depress the pedal on afterwards, it comes down to lubricating all the pivot points and thrust bearing carrier where it runs along the guide. This is with an identical genuine Valeo clutch kit. All the aforementioned vehicles had NO lube ANYWHERE AT ALL visible from factory:mad:.

Great modification. I fitted the early model spring today and it halved the weight of the clutch pedal.:D:D:D
I did not need to disconect the pedal, but found if I attached the spring to the clutch pedal first, and then got swmbo to hold the clutch to the floor with her foot and also hold the torch the other ends of the spring can be hooked in fairly easily with a pair of pliers:D

I too change the spring recently and this combined with my mechnaic noticing that the clutch was loose has made the clutch a joy to drive with

This would be the first mod I would do to any defender with a heavy clutch.

I just did this mod today. What a difference it makes! "sdt463" you must be one small strong person to do with pliers :o
Ended up wedging the peddle down, then using an big old Flathead screwdriver with a wedge cut out of the end to get enough leverage to put the spring in.

RobD, where did you get the parts from, if I may ask...? Looking to get them and do the mod on mine as well, as the wife has decided to give up the Grand Vitara "town car", and drive the Defender full-time...
Cheers!

These guys are pretty good with prices and prompt
To do it properly you need to order the 2 round plastic bushes and the plastic guide that goes in the slot on the pedal.
And with all 3 in place it is a bugger to fit the spring:mad:.
But worth it knowing it is done right;).
