IIRC, it was a concept car developed when the LJ Torana V8 (supposedly the XU2 ?) was being considered.

I do.

Well not originally, but I read about a lot of cars when I was a kid.

Pop it was built to showcase the all Aussie v8 the 253, the one you may be thinking of is the white gtr-x that had the first 186s that was developed when the LC was being built.

The Hurricane was a dream or display car that predates LC Torana. You may be thinking of the GTR-X which was contemporary with LC/LJ. The GTR-X was considered for low volume production.

Note that there was no Holden or Torana model called XU1. The car was a Torana model 82911 with production options including XU1.

GM Options Codes-

XU1 - Special Vehicle Equipment
XU2 - unused code, allocated to Bedford vans
XU3 - neutral coloured headliner in lieu of colour toned headliner
XU4 & XU5 - export lighting modifications for Asia

Too long ago to remember any more XU code numbers.

You could be right about the GTR-X.

I disagree with you about the "LJ82911" being called and XU1. I have a (digital) copy of one of the GMH sales brochures from 72/73 and it definitely calls them an "XU1".

I can assure you that the model as charged on the GM-H invoice to a dealer was 82911. Model would appear on the invoice as 82911JR in the case of an LJ in right hand drive. Options were listed under the model code and charged individually.

I was one of the guys at Pagewood who checked the cars off and signed them out of the plant.

8=Australia
2=series and trim package
9=six cylinder engine
11=two door notch back body

The publicity people may have produced brochures playing on the XU1 code as a model but this was not the case in the factory or finance dept.

I can not comment on what was on dealer delivery document, but the vehicle in question was called an XU1 by someone at GMH, even if it was only the publicity department (and the factory motorsport team IIRC).

Reminded me of the Alfa Romeo B.A.T. Concept Cars of the mid '50s :)

I saw them at Silverstone one year and was amazed at the quality.

Pretty sure that the hurricane also ran the XU1 drive train being a 186s with triple su carbies. I'll check out my GTRXU1 book in the next few days. I'm sure there was pictures and details of the hurricane in there. From memory this beast even had a reversing camera way back then.
To be honest I'm a bit of a Torana nut here I love the XU1's

I'm sure the hurricane is rear engined using a 253 but there was a torana XU1 based conecpt car that the name escapes me- found it GTR-X .
