Got home from work early so that I could pick my son up from school, and look what had appeared! It is amazing what my wife can get up too even though she is in Victoria at the moment. Her name is Wow, and she is just holidaying at our place for a while :D (he say's breathing a sigh of relief) Dog is not happy, but he should get used to her shortly. All I know about horses is they eat grass, and fertilizer comes out the other end. Luckily the owner should be by a couple of times a day to keep an eye on her.
I am worried about the gate however, as every time I drive up to it, she wants to be there also. I don't want the responsibility of her getting out. Will talk to the owner tonight and see what she recommends to do.
Cheers,
Ken

You should keep the horse and give away the dog. Honestly, horses are a lot of fun, require some effort, though. Sometimes I wish I still had one...Can't you fence off your driveway that the horse cannot get to the gate? Or just tie her up before you pass the gate?

Horses are useless beasts, they run up expensive vet and farrier bills and will never guard the house for you. They are always busting through fences.
the .308 and butcher is the best idea in this thread.

What about the lack of oil leaks and the reliability factor, this form of transport is just as old as a Landy (saw a 1908 Series 1 advertised the other day ) no slower, you still get wet and it's no more uncomfortable, fully hosable too, and sustainable...I could go on. I'm going to sell the Landy and get a horse!

My brother had seven horses on our property and only ever rode one or two (endurance), he was always out of pocket and hitting the folks up for a loan to pay some sort of bill for the horses. The loan is now over $100K, but his nags are on rental property and the last three times we've seen him it was with his hand out.
So IMHO shoot the beasts if they don't do anything useful for society or make money.

got to agree, if you can make some $$ through agistment then thats great :)
My wife has horses and once they get past racing if they aren't used for breeding the dogging truck comes to visit.
Its quite sad some of them have such nice personalities, but I couldn't afford to keep them :(

"if you can make some $$" ......Cause that's what it's all about isn't it making money, using and abusing and then mincing every last cent out of their dead bodies in dog food? I'm not having a go directly at you, but rather at societies attitude towards animals in general. Horses used to be man's most valuable assets and now they're relegated to dog food.
So IMHO shoot the beasts if they don't do anything useful for society or make money.

yeah I have to agree, its all a bit sad.
Like the nice looking horse in the first post on this thread, he looks nice enough, some of them have great personalities and are gentle giants and are such nice animals with great inquisitive natures that just want to spend time with you, some are not.
once in a blue moon I know one of the trotters gets rehabilitated as a companion horse, but in general they all go to a worse place :(
if they weren't so big they would make great pets :) But a 6x4 PILED trailer of poo every week from just two or three of them .....man!

It'd have to be an old one, a new one might go faster than the Landy:o

Making $$ through agistment and horses in general is a false economy. You 'do horses' because you (or the SWMBO) enjoys it.
I spent the better part of the weekend getting new tyres on the float, picking up hay and installing new fencing.
Got a bad case of Mondayitis.....

I wish her name is "Black Cavier" I would have that new RRS that I have had my eye on. No wait a RRS TDV8
In all seriousness, she is a beautiful horse, and the fertilizer is finding it's way onto the garden. For an ex race horse, she has a lovely nature, and is very gentle. I'm glad she has landed in the care of someone who looks after her, instead of some of the alternatives.

Well, that could/will apply to almost any animal (or other item), depending on your personal view and preference. What do you consider "service for society", btw?
Horses are, as are Land Rovers (especially Series vehicles), quite often wanted and admired just for what they are and represent, it's an emotional thing, nothing you need a reason for. Furthermore, horses can make themselves useful, in plenty of ways. On a side note, Landies and horses go well together, at least if you look at some brochures and commercials straight out of Solihull :).
Whether you now put your affection towards animals or vehicles, it's just horses for courses (if you pardon the pun).

We have 300 cattle on our property and I have 4 dogs at my feet.
The cattle are Fresian being bred up for dairy work and dogs are excellent in doing dog work. (cattle and guard duties)
With horses you have to check them every day, they need to eat every day and may produce vet bills whether they are being used or not.
In regard to my Land Rovers, I can park them up and not use them or even look at them for months if I choose and they don't consume any petrol when not being driven, they don't get skittish when approached by someone they don't know and will go where ever I point them.
And at least horses on courses are doing something useful for society, keeping bookies and gamblers together in the one enclosure and providing employment for hundreds.
I still have no time for horses.

You forgot that horses get rugs taken on & off and stables, yards & paddocks mucked out.
My SWMBO's stock horse is excellent at doing mustering work. Way more expensive to run than a motorbike or ute. Stock horses do come into their own in steep country though.

Stockhorses dont need rugs and stuff. They eat grass . Dogs you have to go shoot something for them to eat.
Horses like Tickfords too.
