View Full Version : Trading a 90 on 110... sad and happy :/

Hi All,

With the arrival of some little pitter-pattering feet my beloved 90 must go :(

I have been through all the indecision of getting a disco (or heaven forbid something Japanese) to replace it with but fortunately for me swmbo insists on another defender (yay :D).

I currently have a fairly well sorted 2005 xtreme which has seen some amazing places (including doing the CREB track in the rain) and never let me down, 140,000km without 1 problem.

Any ideas on the following? I have been researching till my brain hurts, mainly hoping to get some opinions on the following...

1) Anything to consider when buying a new 110? Preferred dealers? Better to buy near new so someone has lost the money and sorted out the bugs?

2) Traction control/ABS or aftermarket Lockers (I use a defender for what it was intended). The TC on the 90 has been great but as it is an expensive option on a new one, thought maybe lockers might make more sense.

3) CRAB bars. I have read most of the threads on these, but nothing recent. Anyone had one of these done in NSW recently? I am thinking it is important to secure the little bundle of joy considering all the work swmbo has put into it :)

Thanks for your help. It really will be a sad day to see the 90 go, but at least I have an excuse to buy a new Defender. Oh yeah, not to mention I get a new baby too :D

Hi Alex,

That price from the dealer sounds very favourable, for the dealer!!

I just traded my 2005 Extreme model 90 in 6 or 8 weeks ago to a dealer, and I got $27K for it. 100,000Kms; Bonatti Grey; Snorkel; Sheepskins; Alloys with reasonable Grabbers on them. Bog standard apart from that (i.e. no winch or bullbar or suspension mods etc).

I'd try a different dealer, or give it a try privately.

David

Edit to say: he put it on his lot at $31,990

Hi Alex

The only thing I would suggest, is the installation by the dealer, of approved anchorage points behind the seat, for the little ones seat belt and cot harness.

Good luck with the change over of the Defenders! and don't forget the pictures of the Bubby on here.

Spudboy - That is really useful info thanks. I was hoping to get around the same $$$ for mine, it has a few more kms but also a few extras. Sounds like I need to do some more shopping around or sell it privately.

Arthur - Makes sense, I have read some of the threads about people having a hard time getting child restraints certified so getting the dealer to worry about it sounds like the way to go. Will post pics of the new baby on it's first out back adventure in the new defender :)

Well, I just think $13K offered by the dealer is a bit of an insult. When I was looking to put a value on mine I just browsed CarSales etc for an indicative price. I thought it was worth about $29K-$30K for private sale, given the Kms etc.

Even if you only got $25K for yours, you are still $12K in front of the dealer's offer.

I would fly over and buy it for the dealers price insult, "Tell him he's dreaming."

Definitely get the dealer to install child restraint points as part of the deal, I bought a Navara King Cab, knowing we would be trying for a family, dealer said (about the fold down seats in the back) "no problem, little seats, little legs" took it to the child restraint place, not a chance.
One very nice modified King Cab Navara went straight on the market.

Funny, they rang back again and I gave them the "your dreaming" line. Dropped the change over price by $6,500 (after they gave me the usual "I will have to talk to the manager and if I get this price are you ready to buy".

Anyway, has all left a distinct sour taste in my mouth so that particular dealer is completely off my list now. They were just having waaayy too much of a lend. These guys have to make a living, but only 1 pound of flesh would be nice.

There is one dealer left in the hunt now (out of the 6 I started with), for a 2010 110 with 6000km so hopefully they can be more realistic.

I think next time I have to go through this I will just send them all an email with my requirements and let them know I am sending it to all dealers. Tell them they get one shot at the best price and the winner gets my business :D

PS: I was warned not to quote asking prices for my car on here as it is considered canvassing and is against the forum rules (fair call I think). If I do decide to sell privately I'll list it in the market section.

Ouch!! Sounds like and expensive lesson and thanks for sharing. No wonder people have such a low regard for car sales people when they do things like that.

I had a horizontal crab bar installed in my 2002 110 about 18 months ago and it cost about 390 from memory, I had one wayne Kerr asking for 1500 AND a seperate engineers report as he was not sure:o
The bar was the same as those on the thread with 3 attachment points behind the 3 seats with a round bar going from one side to the other bolted through the tie down points for the ute(hiden behind the plastic trim.)version of the def. which is just a roof removed and a panel behind the seats.

Do you have to pay extra for Traction control/ABS on the 2011 model?

On the 2010 model Traction control/ABS came standard.

I do not have lockers and have not driven a Puma with lockers. Somebody on here will have the answer.

Funny, I thought it was standard too, but the dealer said "no, it is an option". After having a look on the Land Rover site it seems this is the case.

I have finally, after annoying lots of dealers, found a very low km used 2010 110. Pick it up this weekend... can't wait :) I have to admit, I will be sad to part with the 90, definitely the most fun, capable and unique car I have owned.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Hi Alex,

I'm contemplating either a 2011 or 2012 Defender 110 and thought that traction control / ABS was standard. It is listed as a standard feature on the Land Rover site under both Driving and Transmission and also under Safety and Security. Where did you find that it was an option?

cheers
Matt

Mmmmmm, can't find it now. I think it might have been in one of the brochures where it said "on some models" however all the 110s show it as standard. Maybe it was referring to the cab-chassis?

I am trying to work out why the salesperson would have told me that now. I had asked him specifically about it and told him it was important to me. He said "That's strange, most people don't want it." He was trying to sell me a "2012" model that he was waiting to arrive the next week.

BTW: TC is something I found to be really useful in my current td5 90. Feels counter-intuitive to actually use a bit more throttle when you start to loose grip, but it definitely works.

I am really curious now, anyone else know why/if TC is not standard on a 2012 model?

Probably you need to be mindful of global marketing material and that the Australian market sometimes only gets 1 spec level and very few options (or only ones that dealers can easily fit). Jeep Australia were (are) exactly like this compared to the seemingly endless US options list.

Depending on what else the dealer sells and in what volumes, it's easy to know more than the dealer. Or maybe it's a Jeep thing ;)

Looking forward to pics.

Cheers
