i have recently bought an 86" 1954 with a siezed engine. after cleaning off the crud, there is a number on the block in 2"white stenciling behind the oil filter. the number is 948. does anyone have any ideas about this. i think it could be a stores part number or something.

Hi plodder 54
Welcome aboard to the forum.
If only! some of these old machines could talk, what stories there would be.

Certainly not the engine number which is located on a flat face on the block in front of the exhaust manifold.

My siamese bore '55 engine also has white writing on the block. I'll see what it says and post it up.

AFAIK it's a batch number, from when they assembled the engine. You should find them on all of the engines.

YEAH mine had it as well, a 2 litre 54 engine .. 3 numbers painted on the block side , painted directly on the cast iron underneath the colour ..... its a factory thing when they assembled the motor . MIKE
