View Full Version : Who makes this roof rack ?

Looks as though this may be land rover but I can't find it on their website. I can only fine one with sides and wind deflector.
The cheetah one is more square (and not quite is low to the roof from what I have seen in pics), and the rhino one (my preferred) is only 1.5m long.
Does anyone have a low profile like this that runs virtually the full length ?
New discovery arrives next monday after a 5 month wait. Booked in for OL bar and Safari snorkel next Friday. RWC and tank booked in for mid December.
Thanks
Brett

I think I just saw one as low as the photo. It had sides on it taking it a little higher. It was on a D4 on Doncaster Road Doncaster in (Vic). Nice looking roof rack! Have you asked a dealer? The car I saw looked mickey mouse so might have been a factory fit? It is a lot lower than mine. One thing you might like to consider if you go for one as low is getting it off.
Mine is as high as this picture (http://www.oppositelock.com.au/index.php?action=prodcatalogue&form_name=view_product&category_id=50&product_id=427&pageID=10079§ionID=10062) It is not to bad to get on and off but my hands struckle a little on the bolts especially at the rear few. Not sure how the one your considering attaches but if you like to remove it as I do then it might be worth looking at closely. Your photo looks like a great unit.

Thats the genuine (no longer available) LR Expedition Rack with the sides, wind deflector and cross bar at the rear removed (by drilling out the rivets). I did same thing with mine on my old D3 - and the new owner wanted it so I let it go with the car (see my gallery) - thinking I'd just get a new one.....then found out they dont make them any more. They appear on EBAY every now and then.

cheers

Thanks guys.
I have emailed the uk for this one:
http://www.prospeed-offroad.co.uk/news/25-low-profile-roof-rack.html
380 pounds for delivery....just waiting on a price. Not going to be cheap but I have in mind something like this.
I need for it to take a roof topper as well as other gear at the front and this seems to fit the ball with 200kg capacity.....would only go to about half of that though.

Price for the uk one.
Brett,
Price for the rack depends on which one you need, which depends one whether your Discovery has a glass roof or not?
Expedition rack (standard): 562.50 GBP
Expedition rack (glass roof version): 732.50 GBP
Composite floors (only needed with standard rack): 87.50 GBP
Cross bars: 87.50 GBP
To mount the rack you will need the Land Rover short length roof rails which you will probably have on your vehicle.
The price for shipping is by air, unfortunately it is no cheaper by sea, we have looked into this previously.
1100 pounds all up. Pricey but seems almost perfect!

Brett have you had alook on Ebay, there are some rooftop tent racks there,
Rear half flat and raise rail at front, and I think Rola make a flat rack that you can put short sides and front on aswell.

I have a Tradesman Oval Alloy rack I'm just about to put on Ebay. Bought it a couple of months ago for a trip that never happened and it has never been on the vehicle. I bought it second hand through Ebay but it is excellent condition and needs a new home as I'm moving to Peru for work and everything has to go.
Am in Peru right now - looked at Discoveries but no diesel options here as the fuel quality is not up to scratch for high tech diesel engines. You get a Pajero diesel tho' ..... say no more!!. Don't really want to get a V8 Discovery but we'll see.
See the link for details of the rack. It's full length and just the ticket for trips. PM me if interested. I'm back in Oz a couple of weeks.

That looks great. The "capacity of over 200kgs"is interesting. I thought the spec was 75kg ontop? I know you could put more of course.

I found the rhino flat one. The sides can be put on or off. I prefer t have them off and only place on when needed.
I think I may go with the rhino.....nice a low too, just not quite as low as this uk made one.
Thanks.

Nice rack. I still prefer the flat style tough.
Wow...Peru. That should be interesting. Would be a great place to travel from and hopefully see some of the Dakar.

Are any of the rhino racks compatibile with the LR crossbars? I have both the LR crossbars & the LR Luggage Rack. I want to carry a 2nd spare on the roof but the Luggage Rack is too narrow for my Cooper AT3s. I am loathed to have to buy new crossbars as well. I like the look of the Rhino Racks as after-market racks if they can be fitted onto the LR crossbars.

According to Rhino their Pioneer platform can fit the D3 and D4. Both cars need long factory rails for the long platform. Because I don't have the tracks/rails Roof Racks Galore at Kedron, Qld advised adding short Rhino tracks at the front may allow me to use the long platform. They are giving me a price and measuring for the long platform later this month and I will report back.
Link below to the Rhino site with the long platform.
Rhino Rack - Roof Racks for LAND ROVER Discovery 3 and 4 4WD (with factory tracks long) 04/05 On (http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_LAND%20ROVER_Discovery%203%20and%204_Page_ 1_System_Pioneer-Platform-42103--R--Ext-Track-Mount_4738_4668.aspx)

Rhino's Long Pioneer Platform can be fitted to D3 with Rhino tracks, short at front and long at rear. Am waiting for the dollars to get the platform and 6 legs, tracks already fitted.

I ended up today purchasing the long pioneer platform rack, 6 legs, moveable retainers on top for front mounted gear, shovel holder, awning holder, tracks for front and rear (did not have factory tracks as rep did not sell them to me.....rhino ones are hugely cheaper and look just as good). Rhino racks make a super product which looks great on the D4. Super sleek when compared to other offerings.
Just need to work out exactly how to secure the roof topper. They don't make a specific bracket, but i should be able to make something work.

Ken,
It was the 1928. The longer ones are wider and don't look quite right.
The disco comes in two sizes, 1528 and 1928.
Enough room for my roof topper, extra spare, and two Jerry's (or other combinations)

Guys I have factory short rails - does anyone know if the long platform rack will fit if you add rhino short rails to front - or would I need to remove LR rails and put on all rhino rails?

Stornoway SA I believe it is just a case of adding short rails and then getting the levels right with legs, spacers etc. Probably the 1928 length rack would be best also.

Try roof racks galore at kedron, opposite montezumas Mexican, as they have fitted long platforms to D3 in the past
