Lived in the county all my life and never had a problems with mice nesting in under the bonnet.
That is, until Ive had vehicles with sound insulating engine barriers, providing a perfect nesting site. My RRS sits in the shed next to my old Defender. They dont go near the D. They nest in the RRS under the engine cover. My previous vehicle was a a Disco 2 and damaged the wiring under the engine cover in that too.

As well as chewing wires and rubber bits the grass and paper (component labels), could be a fire source if the put it in a hotspot.

I have cable tied wax baits in the engine bay. Been told cloth bags with mothballs may be a deterrant.
Might try leaving the cover off?

Has anyone got a proven solution? No- Im not getting a cat!

Some corn flour and cement mixed together on a saucer fixes them up.

Since my 1st D2, the engine cover has been removed at the first sign of mice and only going back on when they've gone. The D4's bonnet was left up when they were really bad some months ago.

Little monsters! I've seen a RRS where they have eaten their way in behind the glove box and chewed the loom, stopping the vehicle:(

Apparently there were several rather new vehicles around here with quite large insurance claims for replacing wiring.

last toyota landcruiser i repaired had all the yellow air bag wiring eaten.
they came in through the fan and nested in the fuse box.

we quoted a few $K and had several cars towed in.all the owners supplied parts just the dealer quoted big $$$$ and weeks for repairs.
swap harness and dash ducting was about 2 days easy with a 200 ser.

done large numbers of underbonet repairs-most came in just to get rid of the smell.

normally mice-rats eat into hoses wiring looking for water.
then they make a nest.they love spark plug leads on top of engines.

I worked on a car once that had had a rat living under the bonnet; he had chewed through one bottom corner of the battery and drained the electrolyte. Would have given him a shower to remember.

Possums can be a problem too.
