Sensationalist journalism at its best. Yes it is sad and can be debilitating, but as usual Sixty Minutes have overstated it. There are very few cases like this.
Do people need to know? Maybe?
Do we need to create hysteria? No!
People are intelligent one on one and will digest the information rationally in general.
People in masses are stupid and when we put out a report like this without any real statistics on this and similar issues it causes hysteria, mass overreaction and overuse of medical facilities.
Just watch the explosion in doctors appointments next week.
There are heaps of variations of lung worm that if they get into the human body can be debilitating, just do a bit of research. Then there are many, many more parasites that can devastate the human body.
Should the govt release warnings for all of these? If they did there would be so much complacency when serious issues occur that effect the masses.
60 minutes touted mass reportings across the country and then in the story never followed up or elaborated. All the cases mentioned were in a 15km radius of each other in NSW.
Malaria and many other diseases are debilitating in a similar way, but we dont see rports on these that often, but they are still out there.

It was on Sunday Night program & Today Tonight NOT 60 Minutes for a start. Unless it jumped networks some how. I believe they did a reasonable job of letting people know what can happen. And that Rat Lung Worm is slowly spreading . Would rather be forwarned & be aware than not.

While the chances of being infected with them is slim, a little bit of knowledge doesn't hurt. I used to run a fruit shop just after I left school we would be picking off slugs and snails all day and snacking on fruit without a thought and none of us got lung worm So I'm not going into panic mode.
Though In saying that I'll be keeping a closer eye on the toddler in the garden as I'll protect my kids from anything I can and it's something I wouldn't have thought about.
So I can't see the harm in the story.

Ok now we are being pedantic Gary. 60 minutes, Sunday Night whatever I dont usually watch any of them because they are sensationalist journalism rather than informative journalism. But as I was buggered I could not be bothered changing channels.
OK so you would rather be forwarned and that is fine, but what about the other multitude of parasites like this out there that can do similar or worse. I have my medical dictionary close at hand and I could list so many more it would make your head spin.It would be information overload. As it is we overprotect our kids now. What would be the result if we sensationalised everything.
Put it in context.
If I want information on this type of thing I will get it from medical journals, health department bulletins (yes they are actually out there) or other reputable and factual sources.
Dont get me wrong my heart wept for those poor buggers and yes thier story probably needed to be told, but I would have liked to see substantial facts and statistics to highlight how much of a problem this really is.

the story they did a few weeks back on 7 about the asteroid was great. scientific footage was movie special effects and interviews on how to deflect it. then a quick look at the NASA sight showed actual trjectory and a simple statement , dont worry it wont hit us.when News of the World went down it was a pity it didnt take shows of this ilk with them. give me facts and statistics not conjecture.

??? Was late, where did that come from certainly not in one of my post that I can see.

You made the statement about getting THINKS right, not me and I am sorry but spelling is a big part of getting things right. Don't start picking on other peoples mistakes or errors unless you are perfect. Being pedantic like you were is just immature. By all means highlight someones error if required, but try and not be condescending in your tone, when you are less than perfect.

Don't get pellets, get a blue tongue lizard. The one in our yard keeps the slugs and snails at bay.
