View Full Version : Rodeo - Transfer HELP

Hi all
My 'farm ute' an 05 RA Rodeo manual 3.0L TD transfer is trying to go into LOW while l am travelling at high speed.
Massive grinding noise.

Only seems to occur at high speeds i.e. 90-110km/h only.
I putted around th farm spraying weeds for 7 hours Sat with no issue????


I have to date:
- Disconnected/removed 4WD CPU from under drivers seat - still grinding
- Removed and replaced the 4WD actuator on the transfer - still grinding

Still - the problem goes on. Even with disconnected CPU and actuator.



Any ideas as to what is causing this? Could it be a stepper motor in the transfer??

I am at a loss???

I have no idea as to how a rodeo controls things in the transmission department so please excuse my questions if they are considered inappropriate.

Does the transmission make grinding noises when you select low range and does the grinding keep happening after the low range has been engaged?

Is the selection of low range at high speed and the resulting grinding a response to a command to go into low range?

Are you concerned about an unexpected change which you have not asked for?

I'd expect any transfere case to grind as a consequence of no synchronising rings in the transfer box and an attempt to change gears while the vehicle is moving if it uses the same principles as the LT230 that more of us are familiar with.

You have to start by pulling the transfer case out and fitting a LR LT230 instead.

This will eliminate all the worry about electrically operated transfer selection.

Seems it will be a bit expensive and a bit of nutting out to fit such a good transfer case you may as well just buy the rest of the Defender that it comes in.

Problem solved.

Really though, it sounds as though a detent has dropped out or lost a spring some where along the line.

I pulled the box from a Jackaroo the other day and there is not much you can do from the out side.

It's only 4 bolts plus the usual to drop it out and a lot lighter than a LR box so drop it and whack it on the bench and have a look.

Worsed comes to worse, it's a good excuse to but a Landy.

A friend of mine has one of these and it struck me as entirely mental that the transfer box on a farm ute was electronically operated! Seeing as my friend's has been in for ECU reprogramming I guess they don't build them simple like they used to. Best of luck with it.

Yes. My Defender is a lot simpler. It just leaks oil.

Everything operates just fine when operating the transfer under normal conditions. i.e. selecting 2H/4H/4L.

The noise is coming whilst travelling at speed where NO selction (obviously!) is made of the transfer. It is totally doing this of it's own accord!

Simple. No. I agree. I am at a loss. Feel like just trading it now.

Might send to transmission specialist???

the loss of a detent sounds a likely thing but if it only happens when you get up to a certain speed it could be some logic fault and your ecu's eeprom might have a curruption. Can't Holden service place sort it out? Or are they the ones that have swapped out the actuator etc?

he saga continues.......

Seems NOT to be an electrical issue.
The Auto Specialist l dropped it to for a 'quick look' took the 4WD fuse out and it is still doing it.

So this (to me) points to something physical in the transfer.

Any ideas?
Anyone local to me (Warragul/West Gippsland) that would be able to do the job??
