Hi All,

Would it be a correct statement that I could swap the hubs and disc brakes from a Disco 1/2 (and maybe even early rangies?) onto my 86 defender to replace the drum brakes that I currently have?

Is it a direct swap or are modification needed?

Cheers,

J

I just swopped the whole axle from a D1 to my 86 90 to get disk brakes instead of drums. RRC axles are also a straight bolt in replacement. Can't use a D2 as the wheel studs are different.

110's use a Sals rear end ;)

Veryan, I think you have to use late 200Tdi/300Tdi outer axle bits for it to work, Ben/isuzurover detailed this on his 110 buildup thread.

I seem to recall Keith from Rovertracks going through a detailed rear disc conversion with part numbers for drum rear Sals axles too, should be on here somewhere.

Well that puts me in the market for a Disco 1/RRC/Defender rear end then.

I don't mind pulling off the hubs, its only 6 bolts and a set of gaskets to change them over. No Big job.

Going by his signature I guessing it's going in a 90.

Not on the rear. 6 bolts still even now.

I think there is a bit more to that. Firstly, the axle with drum brakes doesn't have brackets to hold the caliper, so you will have to weld those to the axle. Secondly, as far as I know, the half shafts have different length on drum brake axles compared with disc brake ones (please someone correct me if I'm wrong). Never thought about the hubs, though, but they should be a straight fit (if the amount of bolts needed add up to the same number).
Probably it's easier to swap the whole axle, just make sure the diff has the correct ratio.
