Rear engine Oil Seal

Hi All

Dandlandyman and I were discussing series one rear main seals and he was wondering if you can use the cheaper series 2, 2a ones instead of the series one ones. Thanks in advance

My 1600 does not have a seal at all. It has a reverse scroll that seems to be working OK as long as I dont stop on a 45deg up hill. Later 1600 and 2000 donks had the seal. I got one from a Rover bloke in the UK. I can find his name if you want it. This seal is the same as the early 6 cyl Rover motor had as fitted to early 2a Forward Controls.

According to Rover service newsletters, you can't use the newer seal because of a possible foul with the flywheel bolts. Maybe while the crank is out, put the flywheel to be used on with the bolts to be used, & shave any protruding thread off? Have never tried it, so be aware that the boss for the flywheel may also be too thick. ie not enough clearance anyway!

Some of the early scroll type seals were modified for a WICK type seal .The reverse screw is machined off and they then machine a groove into the two halves of the caps . You then use a wick seal in the groove. I have a 1600 motor with that setup.MIKE

Got the answer yesterday. The Series 1 crankshaft seal surface is about 1/4" smaller diameter than the 2.25 crankshaft, so even if the retainers fit, the seal wouldn't go anywhere near working. So, unless someone knows of another option, 85 GBP plus freight it is...
