Hello

Well I need a little help. I drive a 93 200 tdi Defender VIN SALLDHMF7KA925004. I was hearing a little rattle a few days ago, my mechanic said it was nothing (I've come to the conclusion that he is useless). Then yesterday as I was driving home I heard a bang, and my Hub had blown off. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/11/474.jpg
I wan't to know what I am going to need to fix it. I have done work on my defender before, I just haven't done anything like this. Any suggestion or tutorials that can help me?

Thanks Romey

you'll have to buy a new plastic hub if you've lost yours

if you can get it a genuine replacement will be better than other afer market types - I think MR automotive up your way will have them

good chance to check the bearings while you're at it

I would inspect and replace parts as needed in both end considering that it is a 93 model.
The service provide by MR Automotive is among the best in Oz, if you can afford the cost take the Defe to them.

Its a bit hard to tell from the photo, but that axle looks to be sticking out too far.
There should be a circlip on the axle spline that is sticking out. Should only be about 0.5mm play between that and the end of the drive flange (the female splined bit with the 5 bolts holding it on). If there's a large gap then something isn't right.

I wouldn't have thought that the plastic cap comeing off would have caused any sort of a bang. Sounds to me like something else has caused the noise.

Undo the 5 bolts in the drive flange and pull it off for a look. Perhaps the splines have stripped out of the flange.

Did you loose drive?
Is it a rear axle?
The noise seems strange for just the dust cap coming off. I have lost after market one, but never heard a noise. But I have a 4bd1 so might have missed it, in the pleasant cacophony
I reckon there is something else going on.
What end of Brissy are you ?
Pm me if your not to far away I could help you sort it.

Pm sent.

got a more accurate location?

Drop a line

I think I can see a rotor in there and that looks like CV semi liquid grease leaking out so guessing its the front axle

you may have worn the splines down in the drive flange and the axle, they've then bound and grabbed snapped the end off of the CV and then poked out enough to knock off the plastic cover.

Im out at about for a bit tomorrow, if you can get me enough notice I should be able to load up the tools and get it limpable so it can be repaired.
