D3 in 4WD

Hi Guys,

I took my D3 off road for the first time today. I was going down hill through some dry muds using the mud rut selection in high range, when every now and then it would make a shuttering noise similar to the sound of metal on metal when your brakes are gone ( not a good sound ). On the way back up the hill i put it in the snow/ sand selection and it didn't occur again. Does anybody know what this is ? I later put it on flat grass in mud selection and did some sharp turns, the problem happened once.

That is just the ABS if braking (and a wheel locks), the Traction Control if a wheel spins or Hill Decent applying the brakes if you were going down a hill - all normal on ABS/TC equipped cars.

If it was the traction control activating you would have got an orange triangle symbol light up on the dash.

Cheers Garry, i did not notice a light on the dash but i was not looking at it. This is the first 4WD i have had with all the gadgets should have had it in low range i guess if i needed to brake. Last car i drove off road was a 2007 hilux the disco was so much better even with 18 inch wheels and pretty much road tyres, Where so happy with it. Cant wait for some rain to go back to the tracks i was on.

Those noises and vibrations are not unique to your car - any vehicle with ABS and TC etc does it.

And remember to always turn off the dynamic stability control when 4wding and turn it off again each time you change terrain response settings.:BigThumb:

HDC makes sounds like described in the OP.

Agree with jonesy HDC comes on automatically when you select low range. You need to turn it off if you don't want it. I find it a pain, if I wanted HDC I can press the button myself. I think it only comes on in some TR modes though.

Thanks for that CaverD3 , the number of times Ive belted the dog or argued with SWMBO about who stuck the HDC on when I didnt !!!! So , it comes on everytime you select Low range , how about that !!

Well that is not 100% correct,

It does not come on when you simply select low range but it does come on in most the Terrain Response selections.

So if you select low range but no TR selection then there is no HDC.

bBt if you select for instance Rocks Crawl it will come on and you need to turn it off each time.

You will see the HDC light (car pointing down hill) illuminate when you turn the TR knob.

A bit of a pain I agree as i would prefer to select it when I want it but it is no big deal just turn it off each time.

As already noted that is most likely the Hill Descent Control (HDC), this automatically engages (as per my prior post) when you select most Terrain Response (TR) settings. Disengage by pushing the big yellow button next to the TR knob.

And as also mentioned always remember to turn of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) when off road as it will stop you in loose surfaces as it thinks the car is sliding out of control.

Just in case you do not know how you do this you simply press the button marked DSC on the centre dash.

Not being patronising with my response but these acronyms are thrown around and sometime it is good to explain what they mean, especially if you have not the benefit of someone explaining them to you.

D3/4/RRS's are amazing bits of gear for going off road even in standard spec with highway tyres.

But having said that in all seriousness if a new owner has little idea what the various electronic gadgets can do and have little 4x4 driving experience then the best advice I think anyone can give is go join a Land Rover / Range Rover club and do a introductory driver training course.

You will find out how to go off road safely and what your vehicle can and can't do and how you can make the best of it.

While there are plenty of very experienced people on here who know their vehicles back to front and know exactly how to drive them off road in every condition, still it is best to get some one on one training and that is what most clubs do.

Just looked back over the thread, cheers for the advise ill go back out there this weekend and see how she goes. Very happy with it so far.
