D3 TDV6 Rear tailshaft centre bearing

Trying to track down another wierd vibration that just comes and goes .
It seems to be at about Tailshaft speed .
Anyway ,had a look at the tailsshaft center bearing and its doesnt look to good .
I can lift the shaft in what appears to be its rubber boots in the housing at least 7mm . Doesnt feel like there is a "Bearing" in there at all .
Has anybody got a Parts breakdown or a picture of the parts of the center bearing . and can a center bearing assembly br bought without having to buy the whole tailshaft assembly .?? Its got 170,000K on it ! and its a D3 not a D4 (wishfull thinking perhaps !!)

I read that some of the early D4s were having the centre bearing replaced so it seems to be no different to other vehicles. However as centre bearings often float in their rubber mounts, your's might be OK.

Shaft Bearing Assembly

The shaft bearing assembly comprises a pressed steel housing, a rubber diaphragm and a ball bearing. The diaphragm is
bonded into the housing. An internal metal ring, bonded to the bush, allows for the bearing to be press fitted into it. The
rubber bush allows for small deviations in alignment and also absorbs vibrational forces. The shaft bearing assembly is
located by screws, which pass through plain holes in the bearing assembly and locate into nuts welded on the inside face
of the chassis cross-member.


The problem is what exactly is "small deviations in alignment " ? Does the 1/4 inch / 7mm of slop fall within the small deviation parameter .?
Also , can a Center support bearing be purchased or do you have to get the entire tailshaft assembly ?

You are probably better getting the whole shaft replaced. It has been tried before was was on easy or successful. LR recommend the whole shaft.

Hiya Ponga.. hope it works ok for you... I've got a similar noise too and suspecting the exact same problem...

Also have the D3 with about 160thou on it... the noise tends to be there regardless of acceleration or not and diff oils were fine so expecting prop shaft bearings as next culprit... will let you know if I find anything different and also keep an eye on your progress.

Well since posting this, Ive inspected a D4 and 2 more D3's .The Slop in all of them is no different to mine.Matter of fact I reckon the D4 had more slop than mine .! So ,at this point Im ruling out the center bearing . (so the one I ordered will go in the Glory box,along with a new HP pump and a new Turbo,that I got for a ludidrous price )
Now that brings to this shudder/shake vibration ,to describe it its just like having a set of loose wheel nuts,the whole cat just goes into a shake. A ha ,the convertor, was the next best educated guess,but that was changed with a brand new Gearbox only 25000K's back. After thinking back to when it first occurred , it was directly after changing the rear discs and pads.Methinks ye olde EPB is playing up !
