Nulon Red Coolant, you had better read this!

After having corrosion in my timing cover Disco2/V8 and knowing that I have absolutley done the right thing with coolant (RLL) and soft water.

I looked to the future and asked Nulon tech, if they provide or sell coolant test kits, so I could periodically could check the coolant and it's status, for the very obvious reasons.

Nulon have written back advising they "do not sell test kits or test srips".

Because "these methods have limited ability to give an accurate indication of both anti-freeze and anti-boil properties and corrosion inhibitor properties of a coolant"

So what does it mean ?

Any of us have absolutley no way of knowing if the stuff is working or not, if they can't provide stuff to test their own product then no one elses would be applicable based on their advice.

You could be corroding away quietly and you have no way of checking to make sure the coolant is doing what it suggests.

Go to your local CAT dealer and ask for an SOS sample kit, take a sample and send it off with the express bag in the kit and wait for the results.

Just a caveat.
ALL of the posters on the other thread about your timing cover problem confused corrosion with erosion.
The problems with the rear of the water pump are caused by the water rushing through the pump ERODING the aluminium. This is an active process of friction of water against the metal.
Corrosion is the chemical change of the aluminium to Aluminium oxide caused by an electrolytic process, and it usually happens under the hose stubs as this is where most oxygen is present.
Without seeing a photo of your timing cover I have no idea which is present.

Have a look at this site. Long lasting OAT, ability to test, biodegradable and environmentally friendly. I use it and it is great stuff. It is green and doesn't seem to weep out every little sealing surface and leave residue like other red OAT coolants.

Yes you could be correct and I hope so, the workshop defined it as corrosion, however it may well be erosion, I will send you pic's, as you can understand I'm very keen to understand what is going on and why.

I have used CAt long life red coolant for years with no sign of coorosion in my 300tdi

If it's the pitting behind the pump impellor then it's errosion caused by cavitation of the fluid behind the pump. Nothing to do with the properties of the water/coolant. It'll happen with whatever mixture you have. Just weld and grind it and then ceramic coat.
