We're doing an engine swap on a mate’s Disco TD5. We'll do the injector o-rings & washers and all the other necessary gaskets and filters.

My question is: Will it be worthwhile opening the sump to check to oil pump retaining nut? The replacement engine has ~120K on it and is a 2002 EU3 model.

Is there anything else we should be doing when the engine is still out and with easy access to the engine bay and engine it self?

Thanks, Jurgens

Absoloutely worth it. Dont even consider not doing it.

Thermostat / hoses would also be worth looking at / changing

Dont forget you will need to set the injector codes in the ecu, but that wont affect it starting.

Clutch if its a manual?

Engine mounts...

I would just have a look over everything and if it looks dodgy - change it.

Its quite a big job getting the engine out of a D2. Radiator for instance will have to come out.

Actually thinking about it,.. is the current car eu2 or eu3? If its eu2 the fuel mapping will be wrong (eu2 ecu/map - eu3 engine). Again it will start and run still, but may need remapping.

If swapping the ecu aswell you will need to learn the security (nanocom or similar)

Is the replacement engine Defender or Disco? If defender and you use the ecu for the engine it may also have issues if the disco is an auto?

all
hoses
mounts
idlers
pull the alternator and service it and the vac pump
remove the oil cooler assy and reseal it and inspect the oil cooler
remove the exhaust manifold and upsize the stud holes in the head and elongat the end ones on the manifold
deweb the manifold
setup the fittings for a provent
replace the orings on the water pump, replace it if its showing scouring or wear on the drive member from the oil pump
remove and inspect the power steering pump, mod the outlets on it if there is any chance you might fit a hydraulic winch
remove and inspect the harmonic balancer, replace the seal behind it.
remove and replace the spigot bearing if its a manual
remove inspect and replace the drive plate if its an auto.
inspect the rear main seal while you have the sump off and are doing the oil pump bolt
desludge if required
inspect all electrical connections for any sign of corrosion or oil contaminaition and for any damage to the waterproofing seals in the plugs, (most are available from wurth)
remove the EGR and cooler
replace the inlet hoses with silicon items
clean the IAP,IAT and Map sensors.
replace the front seal on the gearbox if its a manual,
remove flush and inspect the TC, oil cooler and Pump seals if its an auto.
Remove, disassemble and renew the startermotor and the solenoid contacts
Remove and flush the radiatior, rod it if required pressure flush the heater core.
rewrap any harness damage
inspect the fuel lines for chafing, ditto brake lines and ace lines
replace the power steering hoses
Adjust the steering box if required

That should get you started

The current engine is a EU3 and so is the replacement. It is out of a Disco but not sure if it is out of a auto or manual. We don't get the replacement ECU, we'll be using the current one. I'll have to check if it is a flashable unit or not. If it's not I'll be looking for a flashable one I guess.

Hi there Dave,

Thanks for that comprehensive list. Never thought to check some of those items. Some things has been done like the waterpump and starter but others we will need to pay attention to.

Once again thanks for the advice.

Cheers, Jurgens.

PS: Are you still in Perth?
