Hi to all.

I rebuilt my gearbox and transfer case about 20k ago and due to evidence of overheating in the gearbox I hunted down and fitted a genuine R380 oil cooler. At the same time fitted some accessory gauges including oil temps for GB and TC. Thing is they never seem to get above about 60c even in summer so the oil cooler wouldn't even be kicking in on the GB. Haven't done any towing with it yet though. So am wondering whether the overheating oil may have been due to running ATF which I'm not using now. What temps do these components get to?

Thanks in advance.

Les.

I think that you get signs of heat as a result of certain types of failure which generate heat. I had my R380 chew the input gear and the laygear. It was suspected that the failure resulted from a bearing failure but there was nothing to support that. I think the hard surface on the gears wore through then as the gears wore away they generated heat and eventually noise and vibration which alerted me to the failure. Even before I got out of the vehicle there was a smell of hot oil.

I then drove home in 4th to avoid putting any power through the laygear, had the gearbox repaired were all the above info was revealed.

I was on ATF at that stage, now on gear oil 75W80 penrite
