Perhaps I'm fatigued, too sober to think straight or just plain frigging silly but I'm contemplating the unimaginable, a new 110.
Reality, I need a new car/tow vehicle like yesterday, by the time I buy either a Dmax or Colorado and don all of the extras it's around $50k.
Why would I even consider a 110 apart from **** value of saying I paid $54k for a car that will break down and is crap. (I don't need the ego boost, im not a maccas worker)
IMHO the only car I would have no hesitation buying in the current lineup is an RRS and that just costs too much to justify a brand new purchase.

get a 90. You know you want to.
Or a 130 and you could put the hair dressers car in the back:D.

It was also, until recently, the most pointless car in the range as well (that mantle now well and truly belonging to the evoque).
It's just a D3 without the cargo space, after all.
I know quite a few blokes who've driven and one who has bought an AMAROK and they are full of praise for them. And lets face it all the jap (read thai) utes are rubbish.

I took your advise and test drove an Amarok this morning, very impressed. The only bad point was the dealer cannot fit a bullbar due to loosing the 5 star safety rating. It would be interesting to load one up with a loaded float and see how it tows. I think it would struggle a tad.

Did you have the chance to test or considering the Ford Territory Diesel?
It would be a good towing vehicle I guess.
How compare in value for money with the ute VW?

If I was buying a new foruby right now this would be the go for me. From all acounts in the press these are the beez knees. Lots of power and torque, good interior, 5 star ANCAP and looks pretty good to boot IMO.

Dobbo, i looked at the amarok option, they look good, same as the ranger and would love the 5cyl version, but in the end i just couldnt see either taking the beating a defender will take or keeping up with a defender off road... i was thinking mainly from the family tourer and could have seen me taking either of the 2 to cape york when the time comes, then there was the IFS factor which is something that really turned me off in the prado...
Theres something about having solid axles and coil springs all round, real 4wd selection(no push button crap) and decent gearing that kept me on track with buying my 130.... Go the 130 to do away with the ABS/TC crap and build it into the truck you want like i am doing.

3.2 Duratorq 5 cyl is apparently an enlarged puma donk, with the extra cylinder and been around in UK Transits for a while. They reckon it goes pretty hard.

My father bought a BT50 3.0TD recently. Just over $30k for a dual cab with dealer fitted snorkel and alloy tray.
He had an ARB bar fitted as Mazda wanted silly money.
The only downside so far has been the ride from the rear leaves. Towed my boat well. The gearboxes were occasionally problematic in earlier models, however so far so good (apparently the gearbox has been strengthened).

I asked a guy at work about these as I was impressed on a test drive and he had been driving a work one for a few months allready. He just smiled, apparently this particular one had done not handled life to good, not as bad as a Puma in reliability but not far off.

Is it the currant 3.2 5cyl model Matt, with 147Kw or the previous smaller model, there's a big differance.
We are picking up a new Amarok Limited Edition tomorrow, traded the D2 in on it:cool:

a few months old,
the local VW dealers quote, either he's a ****ing idiot or thinks i'm a ****ing idiot. I take it from the syntax and gramatical errors in his email that either is a viable option.
I'll be calling him up in business hours and having a sex talk with him about $182 floor mats, electric "break" controllers and such. I'll be generous and give him a second chance.

Having crawled under, over, through all those mentioned above...
I'd say the Amarok will take the same beating as a Defender, and then some...
Bloody tough chassis, excellent welding, tucked up neatly... Plenty of offroad protection underneath..
I'd have no hesitation of doing the Cape in it in stock format...
I love Defenders - But this DakDak has it nailed as an all rounder...
I'd say Mr Redback and Partner will be very happy with their decision(s)...

Not personally... But there are several people I know with one...
Will get their feedback...
Redback has one arriving today... He may tow something very soon ;) and write a report....
We made a choice to go D4 as its proven towing our Cat... As opposed to the Amarok, which we couldnt get the opportunity to hook up and tow before buying...

Buy a tidy County 110 and restore it using a 4BD1T and all the good gear you always wished to have. This will be considerably cheaper than a new vehicle of any make, and more capable.

Totally agree, and for me, mine is tidy enough, but until the day when one of you blokes can say x amount and I'll do it for you, the county will still be ultilised as a farm implement. If I had the time to do a full rebuild, I'd do it yesterday.
Where's this blknight when you need him.
Anyway it's a replacement for the D2 not one of my many toys.

Its not an answerable question, without a detailed list of expected results, also if you wanted a "quote" then anyone who does this sort of work, will always add 30+% for a quoted job, its to cover your ass, make some money and if you come in way under, you can refund and make the custome feel pleased
Anyhow........you wont do it:p

It sounds like you have already made up your mind..... You buy a Defender because it is very capable off road straight out the box and has a 1,000kg payload for touring. :)
You don't buy a defender if you want it to handle like a sedan on the freeway or because of the price tag. (It is hand made in England for off road green lane'n and farm work.) :(
I've done 20,326km mainly on trips in my 110 (2010 Puma) and it has not broken down, nor is it "crap". The only issue I have had is the air conditioning which has been fixed twice under warranty.
If it does not feel right, do not buy a Defender.....:o

It's very hard not to compare models when you have owned at least one series of the same car, they look similar, but are totally different vehicles, and when you and others truly believe that the outdated model is far superior than the new one it sways your thinking.
If I had never owned a 110 before I would most likely be happy with a Puma, the fact is I am looking at a tired old 110 as we speak.
And for the record, my Isuzu powered County wasn't completely built in England, it was finally assembled in Australia.

Unless the accessory belts goes which then throws bits into the timing belt which then proceeds to bend valves, then I guess you can mean the same. http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/139698-africa-tough-amarok.html

I drove a Stage 1 V8 for 2 years (on loan) before we bought the Puma. I had given it back before my own 4wd finally went boom for the last time. :(
To be honest, it went like the clappers and handled really well. :o (The only let down was the old wiring. It needed to be completely re-done to be reliable for our needs.)
Good luck with your decision.

Did you notice this?, Overlander mag report[ for what it's worth] Sept. 2011.
" The Amorok's fuel tank is low slung, with a plastic guard. The air intake faces forward, and appears to be on a level with, or slightly below, the headlight. It would be very easy for a river crossing to cause ingestion of water into the motor. The spare wheel appeared to be the lowest departure point, and therefore vulnerable to damage. The long rear mud flaps could be easily torn off when reversing in deep mud or sand."
" The ABS Traction control cables were not tidy around the rear wheels, driving where there is a lot tree debris, they could be hooked up and damaged. The tail gate , when closed, had a large physical gap between it and the floor pan, dust and water would easily enter the cargo area, making food or camping gear vulnerable . Under the bonnet, there is no space for a second battery. On fast broken ground, the soft suspension meant the Amorok bounced too much. The stability control was too aggressive, making progress in sloppy mud difficult. Without out it, however, the vehicle was dangerous if pushed too fast into a muddy section of track" . There is more, but that is enough, give me the Defender any day, [please] Bob

Funny isn't it... Same magazine sang its praises recently too.
Reviews are jaded by the preconceptions of the journo I doing it.
Perhaps Baz will post some pics....
Btw Bob... The extremely exposed plastic defender tank has no guard and if I hadn't replaced mine with steel it would have been torn apart many times!
