Highest Km D3/D4 with no major problems ?

I have recently bought a new D4 SE which I am very happy with, so far. My last two vehicles were both Landcruisers - a 60 series which was bullet proof and no issues and a 100 series which had a new gearbox at 100,000km and a new motor at 150,000km. I decided to change to Landrover for a number of reasons after comparing the new 200 series Landcruiser and the D4.
I discovered this forum after making my purchase, and have read with interest of a number of mechanical failures from minor problems to total engine failure. I know you can have problems with all vehicles no matter how reliable they are supposed to be. (my last 100 series Landcruiser springs to mind !). I have often heard stories of Landcruisers with 400,000 + kms on the clock and 'all they ever had to do was change the oil' i.e. no major mechanical problems.
I am really enjoying driving my new vehicle and I am hoping I made the right choice in changing from Landcruiser and would like to think I will be still enjoying it for many years to come. There must be someone out there with a 'good new story' about their trouble-free motoring in their Landrover Discovery?
I want to hear from owners of D3/D4 who have done lots of kms and had no problems at all.

same same had two toyotas. Never again. Hopefully the land rover is a good choice. Had ours a week done 600kms and loving it.

Me is the same Chris. Had three cruisers and now travelled 75K in the D4.
Minor hicups at the start (pre-patch) but going strong and loving it.
I too had the choice between the LC200 and the D4.
I do know a bloke who bought his at around the same time as me (Dec 2009) and he has covered around 200K with no problems.

I have 2006 D3 TDV6 SE Auto - now 108,000km with no problems of note.

I travel full-time towing a 23ft 2600kg van. In the past two years I have met at least a dozen other D3/4 owners. None have had any major problems and were happy with their Landy.

About three weeks ago, I met a couple who have been travelling around OZ for 5 years and have a 2005 S D3 TDV6 Auto. They have down 320,000km and have no problems other than the winding mechanism for spare wheel which they replaced with a non-standard arrangement. He was very happy with his Landy.

I guess it is all about how you drive it, how you service it and how you use it.

My D3 is certainly the best 4x4 onroad I have driven, the best and most stable tow vehicle I have ever owned and a great 4x4 when I have done any offroad

On Original Turbo, replaced Compressor.
Same engine and he uses Caltex Magnatec. ( not the same oil here in Aus)

I do know a bloke who bought his at around the same time as me (Dec 2009) and he has covered around 200K with no problems
Just got off the phone to this bloke that I mentioned, and yes he has just clocked over 200,000Klm's with no problems.

He is on the road most of the time, some weeks up to 4,000Klm's for the week. He was looking at updating (same D4 3.0Lt SE) but can't justify the change over seeing as though his is going so well.

BTW: He has covered 85K on his Pirelli ATR 19" and claims he still has between 5,000 - 10,000Klm's left before he has to replace them.

My thoughts on high Klm vehicles is that the engines will do more problem free Klm's providing they are not stop / starting all the time, nor having short runs. Look at how many Klm's taxi's go for.

And that was in April, it'll be over 450,000 miles by now.

55 plate means 2005/6 vehicle, for those that don't know the UK plating system.

I have friends with TDV6 RRS's and D3's back in the UK with over 150,000 miles on them with no real problems. Just serviced on time and crucially, if something is showing signs of causing issues then that item is dealt with rather than left to fester. Mate had a misfire on his TDV6 RRS 3 months ago so had James French investigate it, turned out to be a duff injector. Changed that and all is well again. That car's an 06 with (last time I saw it) 165,000 miles on the clock.

Everyone's heard of lemons and with the internet, you generally hear more of the lemons than the good ones. So much so that if you believed everything you read about the unreliabilty of *insert any make of car here* you'd never buy one. My own motto is look after the car and it'll look after you. Certainly worked for me with my LR vehicles anyway.

I wouldn't say mine was terrilbly high compared to ones in the 200K km range. Mine had close to 150K km at the time I just sold it. I never had one major failure resulting in me being left standing on the side of the road stranded however I had early teething issues that were always identified and fixed promptly. Some faults took a second go but when you consider I bought a very early D3 (2005) and that was at the time the D3 was released around the world so you would expect early teething issue on a new and complex vehicle.

This time around I have waited before buying the D4 to let minor bugs get ironed out.

So that's 71,000 miles in 10 1/2 months, easily beats my record of 65,000 in a Hilux one year and I thought I'd lived in it to do that many. He'll be heading for 85,000 in the year at that rate (135,000 kms :eek: )

Sorry I missed your previous responce, but better late than never.

I don't mind admitting I would like a new D4 ...but for me its also a case of bang for your buck, for just a few thousand dollars more than a new HSE D4 with the same options ticked as our HSE D3 came with including Logic 7 stereo, adaptive headlights, cool box, premium sat nav, e-diff, sun roofs, F&R parking sensors, rear air con, premium Ice pack and roof rails I purchased a 90k TDV6 HSE D3, a brand new Jayco 18' Outback caravan, a highly modded and very capable off road D1 and the D2a HSE.

A fellow D4 owner that bought his 2 years ago when I bought mine, has covered over 200,000Klm's (have mentioned this in another post).
That equates to over 100,000Klm's a year. He sometimes travels up to 4,500Klm's a week.
He was going to trade it recently, but given that he has had a trouble free run to date, why swap.

Not really high numbers but 73,000 in 30 months for a MY09 V6 petrol,:D and very happy with the car. Only had minor issues around central locking and radio reception playing up so can't complain. Doing 600+ km per week is killing me on the fuel bill though, :( so any donations gladly accepted.

Thats great "mileage" , but what gets me is this guys insistance on the fault was a
"fuel regulator valve inside cylinder 3" What on earth was he talking about.?!!!!! If this the feedback he got from his stealer,then they probably having a Lend of him.
Just Love the way he posts a Parts breakdown and circles all the valves , as if someone told him that those thingys are "Fuel regulator valves".Now,how does someone of that level of Mechanical Knowledge get that level of engine life ?
I suppose the old saying of "Ignorance is Bliss" comes to mind . Probably the long life was caused by the old "TAXI Syndrome" , in that the engine probably went through a significant smaller number of Heat Cycles , Thermal shocks.

Your absolutely correct 400HP the workshop feed him a load of old cobblers ..they should have told him it was 'The fuel and air regulator valve inside cylinder three that failed' ...;)

Just goes to show that you don't have to have any real mechanical knowledge to set some sort of amazing reliability record. ...Hats off to the man!
