kinda trying to avoid a phone of any sort, just looking for a costly and inconvenent way for my worrysome partner to check on kids{more the ability to check than the need to} and already have hf in the car.

tell her she needs to learn how to use proper Ham techniques and establish coms HF-HF then you eliminate the need for a phone at all and introduce a whole new field of hell for her to learn.

last time I was playing that game you could simply give your HF details to the RFDS service and they could make contact with you in the event of an emergancy.

I'd strongly suggest you check out the VKS737 website at VKS737: The Australian HF Radio & Radio-Telephone Network ! (http://www.vks737.on.net/)

Invaluable comms system when travelling the outback.

I am with Radtel from Lake Macquarie they seem to be ok about$100 per year about 99 cents per minute. You can prepay for calls and have a credit then use your credit so bills don't arrive when you are away. They have a good range of frequencies and locations. Remember though it is HF but combined with the VKS network a great asset in the bush. Do you have a radio and what type as some models one can program the frequencies yourself ?

im not shure if the codan 9323 has radtell freq's installed ,ill look later. curently im with reids and vks so have hf radio club ,reids and vks freqs so vks or hf radio club is the logical choice as the radio dosent need reprograming.
