D4 Park Brake Question

Hi, Swapped the trusty D3 for a D4 a few months back and I am wondering if there has ever been a need to release the park brake (PB ) on a D4. I had to release the PB on the D3 a few times (lifting cover and pulling the hidden cable etc) and I just want to know if there is a similar process on the D4 or is it now not needed, if its not needed, does anyone know why?? Thanks in advance.

Same process, and there have been a few reported instances where it has been used. Hint, keep that battery charged up.

Mine started playing up at around 60,000Klm's. Had to release it by pulling the vertical cable under the cup holders in the centre consol.
Turned out to be a faulty actuator which was replaced under warranty.
So the answer to your query.............yes, they still do play up, despite being told otherwise.

The vertical cable has a loop in it to enable you to hook something through it to pull it up.

Had to talk my wife through it yesterday with mine:eek:, the laughter in the office could be heard miles away I think:angel:

Remove cup holder inserts, remove cup holder base (remove water shedder via 2 screws if fitted-earlier D4's didn't have them) then you can easily see the silver looped cable, grab tool kit (tool kit also has a screw driver-double ended) from r/h/r & remove handle/rod with hook end, place hook through cable, kneel on front seat, make handle into a "T" piece & lift until you hear a loud "Bang".

That's pretty much it. Drive away.

I did a "dry run" emergency EPB release whilst in the comfort of my driveway. It was quite hard to get the whole cup holder assembly lifted out as I did not want to over force it and break something. Certainly not as easy as the D3 which I had to do on a few occassions. I had to do the cable release once on the D3 when the EPB jammed on after I used the Park Brake at a traffic light. The old method was easy to get to once you knew how. Even knowing how with the D4 will only speed it up a bit, in my opinion the designers have over complicated this whole thing. Suggest people have a practice, you never know when you will need to do it. I could not find any instructions in the handbook, does any one know if it is in there?

I'm new to the Discovery 4 scene & wasn't aware of the electric park brake until I parked in the garage with the windows down. Since then I've just left it in park if I'm punting around the shops. I can see it wearing out fast! Like the folding mirrors you can't turn off.

Hi Robocop, I have realised that the EPB needs to be "used" to ensure it does not jam up due to lack of use and deposits etc building up. Suggest you do use it in places where if it jams on it won't cause red faces or traffic jams. Also suggest if you are "tool friendly" practice the emergency release proceedure, its not that hard once you have done it a few times. We all need a park brake now and then so I have resigned myself to nursing it, so if I do need a PB it will be in good working order.
