I posted this question in another thread along with another question, and as such it possibly became lost, so i have started a tread with the specific question here.

When matching the Discovery 4 to our caravan (9 metre, 3,500kg), the van draw bar is about 2 to 3 inches above the Land Rover tongue and ball. Land Rover say no problem, just attach and the car will take care of everything, (my paraphrasing).

I would appreciate it if you could advise if you use a towing hitch to raise the car's tow ball to match the van, or if you just attach the van as per Land Rover.

Best wishes
Bruce

You should be towing the van as close to level as possible. I can't see the car raising itself 2 to 3 inches - it'll raise only to level itself. I'll post pics of my various towbar tongues later.

Cheers,

Think the short answer is definitely adjust the tow ball height.
The car just does its best to sit level.
I don't tow regularly so others will know better, but I'd be pretty uncomfortable knowing there was 'negative' weight (lift?) on the ball...

I have now towed from Port Macquarie (NSW) up to Caboolture (QLD) over the last 4 days. When the van is connected to the car, it is just ever so slightly nose down (small spirit level check). Towing it feels good, but then I have never towed before and have nothing to judge it by. However, I doubt that any different tow bar set up (Rapid Hitch or similar) would level the van. There is just not that much to level.

I guess I will see how things go.

Best wishes and thank you for your replies.

Have you thought of the 'Mitch Hitch' option?
