It would be about the first time someone has caught my 101 at wide open throttle on vid and if i remember correctly the tacho was just shy of 6000rpm.
Tuff little motors the 3.5 eight.
There was another long steep hill climb later in the day and it was the same story.
I think my little 101 is about as sorted as it is going to get.......but still cant wait for my new wide rubber.
I did a bit of winching too, but I have to adjust my load clutch as it wasnt pulling that hard.

Do I love driving my 101 off road......you betcha.

Awesome link by the way they do sound bloody good.
How hard is it to get a locker for the rear ?
Do you use an air locker?

Both Ron and I (me taking Ron's lead) have detroit lockers in the rear. Ron has a ARB air locker in the front (I have the locker but not yet installed).

The detroits go straight in about 3 hours putting it in yourself. The ARB needs a different set of side gears (purchase from AJs in Melbourne if he has any left) to match the 101 axles. If I had my time again I would look at ashcroft lockers to see if the side gears will go into them. Ashcrofts are a bit better designed than ARBs (no o ring problems).

Nice country Ron.

I think my Rangie went straight up that bit but got stuck on a greasy slope later on. Or is that not the property I'm thinking of?

Yes its the farm, but it is a secret spot with a old dam which is the local 4WD clubs mud hole.

The detroit works very well in a 101 and overcomes loss of traction due to stiff suspension lifting wheels and brings the off road performance equal to that of modern patrols and cruisers with a little bit of lift.
there may be none or one or two left from the USA from only one dealer.
Eaton/detroit for 101s are no longer being made.

this is why you need the detroit

You mentioned a dealer in the US that may have a locker for the 101. Got a name, site etc?

Is it recommended to put one in the front as well?

The detroit will not work on the front diff and a manually operated locker must be used.
The rear diff makes a great difference locked, but the front diff is alot more work to fit with less overall gain.

I've contacted that mob in the US. See if there's any left, plus a price landed in WA.

Just got a reply (bloody quick and a Sunday as well) back from gbr. Still got some lockers left. $499 + $60 frieght. It's in US dollars, as I don't think Bill would of did the exchange rate thingy for me.

That's about $521 aussie.

They are autolockers, not air lockers.
Just thought I'd clarify that.

Got mime at Gbr , Bill's a nice bloke and prompt delivery and replies to emails.
I think he had about 10 left when I bought mine in Nov. Can't imagine he'd sell that many.

Are there alternative manual lockers available for when the detroits finally run out?

Standard sals ARB lockers will go in BUT you will need to either get new side gears made for the locker (larger axles on the 101) or get the inner splines on the standard locker side gears taken out to take the 101 axle.

AJ in Melbourne was selling side gears that would fit - I think he got 10 pairs made so most are probably been sold by now but you never know.

Ashcroft makes a better air locker than ARB so you would need to check with them if there is enough meat in side gears to get the inner splines taken out to 101 size.

Good to know they can still be had with a bit of effort. Hard to know where to spend the money when restoring from scratch
