So, in my last thread I boasted that I'd had 12 trouble- free months of P38 ownership.
Well, then the CPS went; easy fix and now today a noise from the rear of the car......serves me right, I couldn't have the only faultless P38 in the world, and if I'm really honest, there is a book symbol on the Hevac.
So guys, stethoscopes at the ready please, for a new diagnosis. The car has an intermittent pinging noise from the rear. Sometimes it sounds like a gas canister rolling around in the boot. Years ago the LSD went on an old Ford I had, and I'm wondering whether ot maybe the same issue? I haven't had a chance to look at the oil level yet, but will do on Sunday.
Any ideas?

Must be the sound or the trumpet sounding the charge from the rear you can hear. :wasntme:Sorry some one had to say it .

There is no LSD in the rear of the P38 unless you've added it yourself...:eek:
(but it will do your head in just the same...:p)
Check out the rear mufflers...mine was making pinging noise...loose bits... needed a large ...very large 'jubilee' clip tightened around it ...no more noise...

Right, had a good look under the beast and found out the clicking and rolling barrel noise comes from the rear muffler! Thank G for that as I thought it may have come from the dif.
Anyway, apart from feeling a bit stupid in my panic, I've realised the pipe tp the rear muffer is completely rusted through.
The car is a little louder, but not enough to be painful, in fact it's still very quiet. I think I may just ged rid of the muffler and weld a bit of straight pipe.

That's what I have and the noise level increase is minimal. It's not noisy nor does it drone.

I am told that that rear muffler is actually a resonator, and I agree with Ron, when I lopped mine off, it made an almost unnoticable difference. I have since learned after switching out the very large LR muffler (under passenger seat) for a smaller high-flow sportier muffler that is about 1/3 of the size, that the resonator could be useful now.
It seems that the main reason that the resonator doesnt need to work very hard on a stock RR is because of the size and quality of the big LR muffler mid-stream.
This thread now connects very nicely with what KeithyP38 said in this thread (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/p38a-range-rover/141972-rear-muffler-needed.html#post1605253). If you put in a sporty centre muffler, a resonator at the back (or a hot dog muffler) will avoid the drone at 2000 revs. I -love- my v8 note though, and am putting up with the drone.

I replaced my cats with much smaller stainless steel ones and the increased noise under power was quite noticeable. I prefer a quiet car and if I had realised the difference it would have made me think twice about putting these in. But then they were about one fifth the price of genuine cats!
No problems at cruising speed, though. Just a real bark under acceleration.

C'mon mate... you heard my P38 last week and you know you need to increase that noise a bit ;)

Yours sounds great. I'm going to drop the back box and extend the pipe until I replace the lot.
