View Full Version : A swb s3 with "personality"

digger
5th December 2011, 02:24 PM
I got back this morning with a SWB s3 I have bought from my old stomping ground, the former owner now deceased used to live out on the opal fields and had set up his own power (wind/solar) and still carted his own water etc.

I knew this vehicle (and his other a lwb) had been "worked on" by him... But I was still surprised with what I got!...

The keys are missing (possibly stolen :( ) but we 'hot wired it" via the coil and a switch we installed inside... I then drove towards home...

About 250+km later it died almost at Port Augusta (I think the coil died!) and I trailered it the rest!.(we were shadowing with a trailer ready)

here are some photos...

the second smaller handbrake type lever that you see in the above photos goes to this...

and leads back to this on the rear diff..

what is this? A diff lock?

a three phase power outlet cover....on the roof....

and the same item, open is a vent!

Under the bonnet - the changed alternator and welder unit!
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/12/967.jpg
I cant find anything out about these welders.... but have been told by some that have used them before that theyre quite good!

will try changing coils etc and see if it starts again soon!!
I would like to move the alternator and welder into my series 1 (56/109)
but am unsure if it will work??

Plan at the moment is to start removing extra wiring (which is in 12v and 240v cables :o )

Its a Nov '77 build and ran quite sweetly sitting between 85-90 on the open road , I even passed a couple cars! The gearbox whines like a ..... well it whines but still ran nIcely, it was a reasonably hot day -in the desert and it hummed!

So , I shall post more photos etc later... but interested to hear any suggestions as to ;

*- the diff "attachement"
*- the welder and alternator
*- the modifications!

cheers

I had an old blIke tell me of an electric overdrive that was available for series land rovers.
Could it be one of those?

the ALTER POWER is definately a welder (even says so on it!) and there is a hand throttle to left of clutch pedal in front of 4wd selecters etc.

I was told that even with about 30+ foot of cables they welded nicely but that the revs needed to be "up a bit". (told by a bloke that used them to do repairs to windmills and windmill stands.)

theres even more "unique personality" to see.. Ill slowly post it up.

cheers!

If I didnt know better I'd think you guys were taking the mickey out of me......

I think I'll remove the welder.. and once Im sure thats all I want I'll sell it on...

but first I want to know about this diff and the welder... (and unravel the mysteries of the wire jungle!)

Well, the roof section is decidedly non-original apparently being made from a 109 hardtop. The colour, if original, identifies it as ex Qld. Forestry Dept.

appears (from interior and under bonnet) originally was sage green or thereabouts..

personally I like the roof and driving with the rear door held up by the struts and secured was quite good actually!.. it was fairly warm outside and felt comfortable in the old jigga!

Amazing! He must have been one hell of a character.Did you know him well? Bob

I met Hans not long after I moved to the mining town in which he lived, He lived outside the town boundary and was actually on the mining fields but allowed (by special permit) to stay there, so must've set up prior to 1971..

Hans was (as you may have guessed) of Austrian decent. He moved to Australia some time after the war and from what I have been told worked for the railways until he was "lured" by the "opal rush" into the area.

Where Hans' house was also was outside the power grid for the town. So he mastered solar panels and "freelight" wind generators to power his house (that he had built himself). Hans used LED lights through the house as a way of saving power and converted old torches and lights to LED to make them efficient. Like many of his generation he lived alone but with a small dog as a companion. He treated the dog magnificently and it responded in kind. The LWB landy above has many alterations made specifically so the dog was comfortable whilst Hans was mining. (the roof spinner, door windows with grills instead of glass, a hook and holes (drivers door) so the door could be held open to allow his dog access. Also a fan (on timer) and a 'in car airconditioner" (ice melts into absorbant 'vanes" in front of fan, fan blows air past these 'vanes" and cooled air results!)

Hans was devestated when his dog passed on (from natural causes) and he himself died about 3 weeks later. He was 80 when he died and was still mining most if not every day. He is buried in the local cemetary and a very large amount attended his funeral to 'say goodbye".

Hans had a good sense of humour and was a keen gardener having a nice native and cactus garden (with vegies) at his place. He also, like many of his generation, couldnt part with things that "may be needed" one day. Hans also showed some of what he had obviously been through as a youngster by creating stores (secured) of dried and cryovaced food around his house 'just in case'.

Hans was a good, hard working honest and approachable bloke, he would give anyone the shirt off his back if they needed it.

It is a pity he is gone for all these reasons and also because
a) he knew where the swb keys were :p

and

b) he knew what combination of these switches turned the lwb on!!:o

Hans sounds like someone that grew up in the Austro/German era of 1933-1945 so therefore would have been schooled in self-suffiencey, and probably been inducted into "Hitler Youth" et-el,and if over 14 the armed forces in 44/45, so,when he arrived in Australia, probably as a displaced person, would have lived a solitary, reclusive life,I had a friend who grew up during that era,and he was similar,he died from the big C a few years ago,but he too would not let anything go to waste, and was well prepared for an "emergency"

Do you actually read the drivel you write.

He is from Austria and was alive during war time, he must have been in the Hitler Youth. It is this sort of racist attitude these people have had to endure all their lives, and would be more of a case why they would become that way than any, but how can you speculate about someone who you don't even know.

You do not have to have been in Europe to get at least some of this attitude. I was brought up by parents who lived through two world wars and the great depression - and avoidance of waste was thoroughly taught in our family.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/12/59.jpga bit of a clean up.... some tyre black, pressure washer......... much better

Well HANS is now going, the electrical problem was a bugger to find but we traced it to the dizzy... a small wire there was shorting (earthing) against the body of the dizzy (only when the cap was put back on!) so when opened and checked all was testing ok, when pushed that little bit down by the cap it shorted!

Used bits from a '57 dizzy to fix ( same as the 73 one!!)
now its regoed and running and great,

so I got about fixing that gap (which will in turn also better support both sides at the back when the "hatch" is open!

so I did this...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/12/21.jpg

it fits to the depth of the cab back (doesnt protrude..) and is secured using the seatbelt bolts and the seat strap posts.. I put a strip of bitumin impregnated foam between the plate and capping. I will do the same under the cab when it goes on top.

still tidying "hans" up..

I painted grill in a nice bright silver, this didnt help fill the holes but made it look a bit better!

Fitted the headlight grills off of the LWB...couldnt resist!

general stuff (including a melted coil the other day!! and I mean melted, dripped and fell out of the coil 'shell' !:o:( )

Am thinking about transferring the gearbox/tranfercase and overdrive from the LWB... (from a 6 to a 4?)

is this possible without much fuss?

also I notice that that has an oil cooler "double loop" fitted in front of the radiator, I assume that is for the overdrive, is that correct??

Although the gearbox and trans on "Hans" seem strong, I dislike the "whine" it
puts out..

Is there a way to replace the rubbers in these S3 wipers or is it the replacement bit or nothing?

Must say Im still enjoying it quite a bit. :)

Series 3 six and four gearbox and T/C are identical except that the bell housing and gear lever are different. These can be swapped between boxes relatively easily.

Replacing windscreen wiper rubbers? Go to typical Supercheap/Repco/Autobahn. Find the wiper blade pack referenced for Land Rovers. Check profile dimensions. Find one same profile but an inch or two longer. It's a common profile.
Peel silicon/rubber bit from plastic backing, cut in half and slide into original wiper housing.
The reason you don't get the pack directly referenced for Landies is they are short enough that you can't make two from each blade.

so check out this vid of the bare metal series from I believe the DUNSFORD collection...

landrover polished aluminium - YouTube

something like that, not polished that much!! and without the clear door or bonnet...

couple quick questions..

firewall and chassis are steel, what about bonnet
(was told by someone today bonnet on s2/s3 are not aluminium/birmabright??)

so if I get the outside soda blasted and sealed,
I'd want the firewall painted a close silver...(or should I try to get it to match the galv??)

the chassis and under wheels would need to be black (for ease of doing it!)
or the panels under arches - original green? (which will still be inside cab and tray and under bonnet)

what colour then should the rims be? (silver or black? I think silver at this time)

interested in thoughts..

cheers
