Lights always on auto off option

Hi, I am a new D4 owner after 10 years of Prados and I wish I had of changed sooner!

Anyway I have a grey D4 and live in the country with lots of shaded roads, is there a way to always have the headlights come on when the car is un use, and then automatically turn off. I dont care if its just the LED's or the main headlights, but from a safety perspective it would be awesome!

The car can be programmed by the dealers to have "daytime running lights", which activates the LED's and low beam. However, in some countries they're not legally allowed to - ask your dealer for more info.

Is your car fitted with the auto lights on option? Pretty easy to use just turn the light switch round to next setting past headlights on, to "auto". If you have this option (which is think is pretty standard) the lights will come on and go off as you need them.

It's an easy fix with a faultmate, but not sure if the dealers can / will do it for you? I'm just up the road from you but can't do the change for you as my faultmate is locked to my VIN number. PM me if you want more info:)

Thanks for the replies guys, waiting on input from the dealer. I do have the auto option but it only turns on as required, preference is to have lights always on and auto switch off when the car stops.

Cant wait to get home to go bush again :)

paint over the light sensor?:angel: cheers phil While I realize the thought was "tongue in cheek", if there is any real problem with painting over the light sensor, it is that the 3 or 4 then thinks it is night all the time and dims the dash display as well.

In Canada, we have mandatory daytime running lights and I would say that setting works quite well. There is also the EU setup, a bit different from Canada as below. Note USA does not yet require DRL.

With the CDN setup, the tail lights also go on, but with LED lights, burned out filaments is I presume a thing of the past. Below is a summary I have re the differences between the Canadian and EU system.
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)

DRL use the full intensity low beam headlamps which are permanently illuminated
when the vehicle is being driven. DRL are used in a number of markets and there are two systems to cover these markets.


DRL CANADIAN MARKET
DRL for this market use full intensity low beam headlamps. The side marker lamps, tail lights, and license plate lamps will be on, but instrument cluster illumination will be off.

DRL are active when the following parameters are met:

a) Parking brake is off on vehicles with manual transmission, or PARK is not selected on vehicles with automatic transmission.

b) Ignition switch is in the ignition position (II).

c) The central junction box receives an engine running signal.

d) The lighting control switch is in the off, auto, or side lamps position.

NOTE:
If the lighting control switch is moved to the headlamp position, DRL are deactivated and normal side lamp and headlamp functionality is operational.

NOTE:
Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) (where fitted) is not available when the DRL are active.

NOTE:
When DRL are active, the headlamp flash function using the left hand steering column multifunction switch will operate normally. The high beam headlamp function using the left hand steering column multifunction switch will be deactivated.

When the parking brake is applied on manual transmission vehicles or the selector lever is in the PARK position on automatic transmission vehicles, DRL are turned off. This is to reduce battery discharge during long periods of engine idling in cold climate conditions. When the parking brake is released or the selector lever is moved from the PARK position, normal DRL functionality is restored.

DRL DENMARK, HOLLAND, NORWAY, SWEDEN, FINLAND & POLAND
DRL for these markets use full intensity low beam headlamps. Side lamps and license plate lamps will be on, but instrument cluster illumination will be off, (means tail lights are not illuminated).

DRL are active when the following parameters are met:

a) Ignition switch is in the ignition position (II).


b) The central junction box receives an engine running signal.


c) The lighting control switch is in the off position.

NOTE:
When DRL are active, the headlamp flash function using the left hand steering column multifunction switch will operate normally. The high beam headlamp function using the left hand steering column multifunction switch will be deactivated.


d) If the lighting control switch is moved to the side lamp or headlamp positions, DRL are deactivated and normal side lamp and headlamp functionality is operational.

You will note that the Led’s are not the DRL’s, but rather the dipped beam main lights. The option exists on all vehicles and is CJB programmed.

The Auto Light & Auto Wiper sensor is one & the same.
If you cover it up, then the auto wipers would need to be tuned off.
