Went for tour through the vic high country last week. My daughter has uploaded a video she took on her ipod of one of the river crossings.

was that water via the heater intake on top of the (L) guard?

the water came in because I left the fresh air vents beneath the windscreen open:(. The heater system has its own water drain.:)

Well done Phil... great vid.
That looks distinctly like the crossing I drowned my old D2 in. We were coming from the other side and the river was even higher then.
I only tried to cross because a deer hunter told us he'd been across twice. He came back while we were recovering and drove it.... his 'Lux was literally floating, his dogs on the tray were chest deep. Wish I'd seen him do it before I tried . It was a very stupid thing for him to do, he was just banking on floating onto some pebbles in the middle to get traction. I guess he made it and I didn't though.

I drove that cup weekend and with all the rain we had it wasn't flowing that high. Great vid love the body language when the water starts coming in. Note to self. Shut all external vents before crossing deep rivers. Check

Sounds like you both had a great time, wet feet and all!

Crossing the Jardine River in 1979 I used the air vents to clamp down on the tent at the top and tied it to the axle housing at the bottom. No snorkels in those days. Note the vacuum cleaner hose on the exhaust pipe.

You're not the first person to forget to close the air vents. Reminds me of the (pre air-conditioning) time travelling up the west coast in summer, 3 across the front of the SIIA, hand throttle set, air vents open, feet up on dash with air flow up our shorts. Pure bliss until we hit a swarm of cicadas.:o

Damm dangerous these air vents!

Deano:)

You went across at a fairly brisk pace. What gear/range were you in? Is that the sort of pace you should use? I ask as someone who doesn't know. I've done some crossings but not that deep. It reminds me my car is much more capable than I think it is (if driven right) in case of emergency.

I was in 2nd low bearing in mind I have 49% crawler gears in it as well. It was the speed & power of the river which was a concern more so than the depth.
