View Full Version : An indecent proposal in Brisbane

Hi Folks

I’m a long time lurker, who is currently driving a Freelander 2, but desperately wants a Defender. I’ve got a different first post for everyone:-

Short Story
I need to borrow a TD5 or earlier Defender 110 wagon from someone in Brisbane (I’m near Paddington) for a few hours to enable me to propose to my better half. I could probably propose without needing the keys (i.e. I wouldn’t need to drive it). I’m happy to pay for the privilege.

Long Story
I’ve been desperately trying to buy a Defender 110 wagon for a long time now. I’ve come close on a number of occasions, but unfortunately haven’t sealed a deal yet. I’ve already got enough vehicular toys, but between paying for the never-ending maintenance costs for them, I’ve managed to put away enough pennies to be in a position to buy a TD5 (or earlier) Defender.

On the other hand, my girlfriend has been dropping blatant hints trying to get me to propose to her for even longer than I’ve been hunting Defenders. Earlier this year I bought a Ducati, and when I called her into the garage to take a look after picking it up, she later confessed to me that she thought it was all a clever ruse, and that there would be a diamond ring waiting for her in the garage, rather than a 1000cc engine strapped to some wheels. I could tell she was most disappointed as she knew I’d spent all my savings at that point on the bike, and there was no surplus left for a ring.

She’s aware that I’ve now accumulated the dollars necessary to buy a Defender (or a ring), so my hope is to say “honey come down to the garage and have a look at the Defender I bought” all the while knowing deep down she’ll be praying for a proposal in the garage rather than another magnificent hunk of English engineering. Then when she gets downstairs and sees an actual 110, and again gives up on the prospect of it all being another ruse, I’ll encourage her to look in the cubby box, (where I’ll stash the ring) and the rest should sort itself out. A bit involved I'll admit, but it’ll have the desired effect (she’s not a “rose petals in the corridor leading to the ring” kind of girl).

So... I humbly request the gracious assistance of a very generous Brisbane based AULROian with a 110 wagon, who can come to my place, park their steed in the garage unlocked, then wait for a couple of hours for me to do the deed. I’m open to suggestions about how I could repay the favour, cartons or cash are easily done, but in the spirit of the occasion, I thought I could drop you and your other half at one of the restaurants in Paddington to have a nice breakfast (on me of course) to pass the time while I execute the plan. The Defender would be safe in my garage, I live in a gated unit complex. Alternatively, if someone's comfortable to let a stranger drive their rig, I'd happily pick it up and return it with a full tank of diesel and some sort of added sweetener.

If any of you are hopeless romantics, or just want a nice breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday, please send me a PM and I’ll get in touch. To the rest of you, I’ll let you all know how it goes!

Regardless of whether I pull this hair-brain scheme off, I do intend to pick up a Defender sooner rather than later, and look forward to contributing to the forum more properly then. Sorry my first post is such an outrageously demanding one.

Thanks in advance everyone
J

Certainly is Martyn – hopefully there’s “no harm in asking”.

Alternatively, if anyone can point in the direction of a commercial outfit in Brissie that rents Defenders (without company livery stuck all over it) I’d appreciate it. I figured that’s likely to be a bit of a white unicorn unfortunately.

This sounds very romantic:wub:

May I suggest you give something of value, like the keys to your Ducati, to the owner of the 110, so they know you are not going to nic off with it:o:D

Have you thought of asking a dealer for a test drive, I have heard some will let you have them overnight which would work well for you;)

Mrs HH - Unfortunately the only dealer I'm aware of in Brisbane that has any suitable Defenders in stock won't lend me one overnight. I went there earlier this year and he wouldn't even let me take a test drive as I was "undecided" between a TD5 and a Puma at that stage. Only decision he helped me make was to not give him my business.

She'd smell a rat if she saw a Series LR in the driveway unfortunately - hasn't been on my radar. It wouldn't change her answer though, she got around Australia with her family in an orange Series III Telecom truck - she loves them.

Happy to discuss security issues privately with anyone who might be willing to assist.

The original idea was to buy one and then execute this plan when I brought it home. If only I could track one down!

Mate, I reckon this is up there with the best of them:D:D:D

And if anyone disagrees they don't deserve to own a Land Rover much less participate on this Forum:mad:

You do know that your "indecent proposal' has launched you into becoming a long-term regular of this forum:cool:

We will all adopt you and become honorary members of your family and I suppose would therefore warrant an invitation to the wedding:eek::eek::eek:

Best of luck with the proposal :D:D

Thanks for the replies everyone. If this all amounts to nothing, I presume it's at least a unique first post...

I'd love a 90 Sue, but I can't fit a surfboard in one, so again, she'd smell a rat. Yours is far too nice anyway - she'd never believe that I could afford it. 200/300TDIs or TD5s have been my targets.

Tonic many thanks for the offer, but I don't want to drag you all the way up from the GC. I was hopeful there'd be someone near town who wouldn't be too inconvenienced by my plans.

I neglected to say that I'd be aiming to pull this trick off early in the new year. I certainly don't expect anyone to help me out in the lead up to Christmas!

Welcome to the forum.

and the ranks of AULRO bike owners as well, even if you are a Ducati snob !

(I'm a guzzi snob, but own none, having a Suzuki GSX1400 instead).

I'd offer my 130 but its a bit ratty and she'd never believe it.

1: Surfboards have been carried on roofracks for years, just tell her you're gonna take the top off it, chuck a rollcage and bikini top on and it'll be set!

2: so you spent the money for a ring on a deposit for a 90!

G'day J,

I have a 110 that I'm sure I could get to you and let you "borrow" for this. Couple of things, though...

- We're heading off in said 110 on Boxing Day, returning to Brisbane by the 22nd of January. After that would be no worries.

- It's a bit tall - 2.35m to the top of the roof rack. Would it fit in the garage?

Good call on finally getting the ring. I have just ordered one myself...!

Cheers for the offers folks - its greatly appreciated.

Weeds, she'd definitely believe yours, it fits the bill perfectly. I’ll come back to you in the new year to see if you’re about. Thank you for the offer.

If there are any other willing accomplices, please let me know in case Weeds is busy.

TeamFA, I’ll be overseas from late January, so that might be a bit late. Sounds like a nice length for a trip though!

Thanks again all.

PS: VladTepes, would I redeme myself if I said my previous bikes were Triumphs? I'll also add that I would love one of those new Guzzi V7 Cafe Racers.

Hello from Brisbane.

To be brutally honest, if the target of your (other) dreams is anything like Mrs LWB, I'd suggest that you actually forget the ring and use your scant supply of money to buy the Defender - because once you take the vow you'll never get another chance..........................

But then, maybe you will get lucky anyway.

Hi folks

Sorry, been out of phone reception for a while (thankfully).

Thanks to everyone for the ongoing encouragement and offers. Still aiming to do the deed in the next week or so.

Weeds you in town at the moment? I probably won't set up a webcam for this moment, but I'll do my best to add to the "other" thread mentioned when I've got my own Defender!

Don't worry Mr LWB, I'm not spending myself out of a Defender! They say it's all about priorities...

Haha - sorry to keep everyone on the edge of their seats! I certainly agree with you aew849, if the right Defender were offered for the task, I’d prefer to buy it rather than borrow it. I went “4WDing” in our Freelander 2 yesterday; it’s a very effective technique for increasing Defender desire.

Work’s getting in the way of life a bit at the moment. Hopefully I can get my ducks in a row and do the deed this weekend. To those generous folk who have offered vehicular assistance, I hope one of you is up for a very nice breakfast on me this weekend.

I promise; you’ll all be the first to know once I’ve gotten a response.

Well everyone, after much delay, I can happily report my insurance premiums just took a very big northward hike.

I’ve now got an expensive stone to cover, along with a MY09 Keswick Green 2dr hardtop!

I was all set to rely on Weeds last weekend to do the deed, when I saw the exact Puma I’d wanted come up on Carsales, so I bought it immediately, took delivery last night, and promptly stashed a certain rock in the cubby box.

I wish I had filmed it for your guys, it went exactly to plan, and she lost the plot. She was so excited about the Defender that I think I tipped her over the edge with the ring as well. She confessed she thought a proposal was a long way off after I had spent (so far as she knew) all my funds on the Defender. Would have won me the Mintees prize on Funniest Home Videos for sure!

Unfortunately, the honeymoon period is already over, as the bloody Puma, on day 1, won’t start. I think it’s the immobiliser, as it’s exhibiting the same symptoms everyone else has seen. The alarm light beneath the tacho (which flashes when locked on my Freelander 2) isn’t illuminating at all. It either doesn’t seem to get fuel at all, or it fires for a third of a second, and then gets cut.

I wish I could just disable it, I’d already organised an expedition tomorrow with a bunch of mates. I’m dreading calling them to say I can’t go – Toyota drivers you see... It’s going to give them some quality “Land Rover’s are unreliable” ammunition!

Thanks again to everyone involved, I really appreciated all your help. Looking forward to getting her started and getting involved with the forum.

Cheers

Have you tried the EKA or even have one?

Got it going folks, but it certainly isn't "sorted". I appear to have no alarm system (no blinking light on the dash, and no indicators illuminate when I lock/unlock via the fob). It just came good eventually after a few hours of efforts, so I'm not sure why. At least it's clearly linked with the alarm/immobiliser, hopefully the dealer will be able to sort it out.

Kris, I think I have the EKA I believe - can that assist? I pulled the fuse box out, tested relays, disconnected battery - none of that assisted with the problem. It just obviously got sick of me playing around with it, and arbitrarily started. No issues then all afternoon, started it and stopped it about 10 times?

My assumption was that it was the immobiliser but if you have no alarm that may or may not be the case. The EKA allows you to start the vehicle if the immobiliser/alarm is not functioning. My bad......

Thanks anyway for the suggestion Kris. I tried the EKA code, but as the alarm doesn't work - it didn't seem to do squat.

After a week in the shop, Austral can't work out how to fix it. Obviously given the symptoms, the alarm's playing a part, but I can't help but think that maybe there might be a simple gremlin in the wiring somewhere. The dealer I bought it off is being very helpful, which is the only reason I'm not demanding a refund.

I'm going to ring up MR Auto this morning and see if they've dealt with any similar problems - I'd prefer they tried to fix it than Austral. On the plus side, if it gets to the point where I have to complain to LRA, they should already be listening. Apparently Austral is getting top down pressure to fix the 110 from Sydney, as so much money has already been spent attempting to in the past.
