I need to copy a number of files from old 5.25" floppy discs to more modern media but I no longer have any suitable drives.

Can one still buy them or will I need to haunt second hand PC shops to find one? I guess borrowing one is also an option.

I am pretty certain manufacture of them stopped about ten years ago, but I would be surprised if there are not new ones still floating round. A computer shop that has been round for a while would be a good place to try, but finding a second hand one is probably easier - I know there are a couple here, but you should be able to find some closer to home.

You could always try your local Computer Swap Meet ?
I did see one here a few months back when last I went to one in Melbourne.

Just found these on eBay

Thanks for that. I will watch it. I'll also check out some local computer repair shops.

I'm surprised you don't still have data on 8" disks. :)

If you run out of other options, according to this site
Floppy disk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
they are still in use somewhere.

Some outdated systems still require floppy disks to operate; for instance, tax authorities and the Pension Fund of Russia, as of 2011, still accept or even require electronic reports to be submitted on floppy disks.[citation needed] (However, they might only be using 3.5" disks. :) )

I have a couple of 5.25" drives that I have kept because I keep deluding myself that one day I will retrieve some of the data I have on a large number of 5.25" disks.

you could also try some of the larger companies around the area as they quite often have old computers lying around in some sort of graveyard area. My old company still had a couple of dos based systems laying around.

goodluck and happy hunting
