PLEASE save me from a Territory or Pajero...

Hi all,
can you help convince my boss (and dad) that we should stick with the Land Rover Badge?
I have an 01' model D2 V8 ES on 'Car Sales' at the moment that is doing its best to make us hate Land Rovers as we have spent nearly $3000 fixing typical 10 year old car issues - radiators, rear suspension compressor, MAF sensor, plugs, leads, coil pack, new tyres - but the hole in the bank is killing my chances of sticking with the brand (though it will be a fantastic buy for someone...)

We will only buy a diesel.
Aiming for under $60000, no more than 2 years old and under 30000klms....

#1 choice is a D4 TDV6 but not in the budget at the moment - close, but not yet. $66000+orc is the cheapest with 22k.

#2 is D3 HSE, but everything vanished from the web in the last couple of months and all that is left is a few low kay 08/09' HSE's and SE's in mid $60's and this seems $10000-$15000 too much to me??? Especially with 2010 D4's at $66k! These are lookng a bit poor in the dash department and showing their age now too IMO.

#3 Misubishi Pajero Exceed - nice idea, Jap reliability???
NOISEY as buggery D4 - goes well though - SUPER POOR handling compared to my ACE equipped D2. I said to the salesman I'd need to keep the window raised in corners so I wouldn't fall out on the ground......
These things have the STUPID swing back door like my D2 but even worse is you cant open the back door with a trailer hooked up as the spare wheel has been lowered for visability!!!
Kid seat retraints are 30cm behind the seats in the floor :( i need the load capacity for work and play!
Quite a few 2010's around with 27000odd kays for $62000 or so.
Should hold reaonable value though?

#4 The humble Ford Territory Diesel AWD - dont laugh, yes I know the off road stuff will be all over - seems like I have no time with the little ones anyway - but the engine is 90% quieter than the Pajero, will destroy it in general driving, and interior is at least 5years ahead IMO.
and i can buy a new one for under $58000....
And I'll drop $15-20k in 2 years :(

The boss is whinging that the D3 will cost us too much in repairs etc, but if we get one and extend the warranty.....
But they are looking a bit old internally for the $$$?

My head hurts just thinking about it.

I guess there's always the next car?????

I think you can win here. Your D2 is probably in good shape, or at least will be, so keep it.

A new Territory will also be in good shape and for the first few years, repair costs should be nil - maintenance will be all you will be looking at and it should not be anywhere near D3 territory.

The Territory is also a good road vehicle; your D2, good off road, plus will haul things the Territory can not.

My well maintained relatively trouble free 150,000 km LR3 needs a few maintenance items in the next few months - tyres all around, $1,200.00; brakes all around, $1,800.00 and a heated windscreen $1,500.00 - this is just maintenance and I presume in the next year or so, the air suspension will need another couple of thousand. This is all just routine annual stuff.

The front end my dealer redid this year, ($2,000.00), so it should good for awhile; the tranny oil/filter change went OK, ($850.00), and was cheap as I found an independent tranny shop that could spell ZF.

The oil is also fresh in the transfer case and differentials, but for the most part, all of the above is just normal maintenance and nothing to complain about for the worlds best 4x4 by far, except when it comes to paying for it.

I have some sympathy for your bosses position. A few years back, one of the guys in my Dads company just had to have a BMW. That one car cost more to maintain in a year than we spent on 6 other light North American manufactured cars and trucks. The BMW had to go.

It is not the same when you are the guy paying, but for someone else to be picking up the costs, the thinking can differ from your own.

Have a good look under the Territory, then have a good look under the Falcon. Look familiar ? Great as a town car, but if you wouldn't do it with a Falcon.......

I think Bruce and the Admiral are right - though you haven't said what you actually use / need the work car for, and why you're set on diesel. If you think you're doing the miles to recover the cost premium of the diesel, and just need to tow, go Territory - and keep the D2 for weekends. A petrol D2 is hardly worth selling for how great they are to keep!
My uncle sold and delivered Ag machinery his whole life and only ever needed Holden and Ford station wagons. But if you need offroad capability for work (or even rough paddock capability) forget the fat Falcon.
The D3 interior may look dated (it was never to everyone's taste!) but its way higher quality than the Paj - and apart from the Paj diesel being outdated and agricultural, their independent rear but no self-levelling means they chew tyres when towing. So ask what you're getting for your money.
As an aside I had a D2 with ACE, and they're hard to beat for handling. Ride on the other hand...

A Territory is a nice vehicle. A mate has one. It's a Falcon station wagon on steroids. They make a good support vehicle for Landrovers easily handling the on road parts collection on Landrover ownership

Mate the D2 is a simple and reliable truck by todays standards. You have spent the money on maintenance why not just stick with it. The costs of sticking in a TD5 to a vehicle with a good running V8 is prohibitive and you wouldnt make your money back in the fuel saving unless you hold it for 15 years at most people's mileage. In any event being used to the V8 you may well hate the TD - its noisy and harsh in comparison to the V8 and you will likely hate how slow it is around town unless modified.

The D2 is a very nice vehicle to drive, again even my modern standards - its comfortable in the cabin and still looks like one of the best 4wd's in the road in my view.

Mate if you still like driving it, and you are not bored - and lets face it they are far from a boring vehicle - keep it and get the value from it.

You could always stick in LPG injection and underfloor tanks if you want to increase economy around town and the east coast fringe.

I'd be making ridiculous, insulting offers on D4's. Anyone selling a D4 now is either in trouble financially or hates the car, and so might take a sub 60k offer.

The first, like you, have been biten by the bug and wouldn't look else where.

Do that, then take him for a drive in a Paj. I think he will get the idea if value for money.:D

Its all down to MISERABLE money! And I'm just never going to have enough :(

I agree with the 'keep it' idea but theres still a few too many bucks tied up in the car and it will reduce lease repayments a decent amount. I've tried this angle too, but got the big 'negatory' on having a car still costing over $1000 in rego and insurance for just sitting around.

I doesnt help that I have done bugger all off roading - mainly thanks to a little arrival last October - and shocking weather all summer. I wouldnt contemplate taking a 'fat falcon' off road - no ground clearance, wrong tyres etc.

Running costs are 'tit for tat' - you've got to maintain one or another.
Not worth dropping a diesel in - and too slow for my liking and not in the realm of economy of the newer engines. Doing 30000klms a year (only using 98 ron) I will save $3300 going to a Territory diesel. Depreciation over 4 years - $30-40000!!!!!

Yep, i still like the old girl and really enjoy driving it, and really can't find anything even close regarding value for money. And it doesnt help when some random dude gives me a thumbs up at the local shops and says 'nice car mate'......

My try this - keep it and buy a Territory TX Diesel.....

Kyle - help me knock up some bush kays to justify keeping it! Same rules as before - no scratches and I dont want to get it dirty :D

I think you have a easy option. test drive a new one of each with the boss on the same day. It is was easy choice for me after do this myself:D it would be hard to take the signifincant step down to the other two.

You could even choose to test drive a nice D3 just not mine as its not for sale mate:D:D:D

Forum forgive me, but: Not sure if its a misprint, but on Carsales there's a demonstrator Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo diesel in Hobart advertised for $50k.
Matches the Disco for tow capacity, properly offroad capable machine... Way better fit and finish than my old KJ Cherokee...

The Jeeps are a nice bit of kit if you dont need 7 seats or the extra space in the load area that the D has. They were more unreliable and pricier on (and harder to get) parts, and also aftermarket accessories in oz...if they have picked up their game, as you would expect with a german platform, then its very good value.

yeah, been looking at that bronze d4, but i dont like the colour.
I'd rather wait - another colour will come up.

Jeep - from word around the traps, the old ones are a pretty poor quality car, and resale is terrible because of it. I test drove a diesel limited. Engine is a ripper. Noise wise (engine and body) its halfway between the Pajero (shocker) and the Disco(THE BENCHMARK). Looks like its screwed together really well, and for $66k they have HEAPS of gear in them. I dont like the fact that there is near no stock in AUST and the dealers are playing on that.
Is a diesel worth another $6000 more than a petrol v6? I think not.
New car, new engine, no track record of this car in reliability etc. Could be a great thing, could be a lemon...

I still can't get over the asking price for a Pajero Exceed at list of over $80k - this is insane for this car. If a Disco is $75k, they should be $55-$60k - no more.

And the more I think about the rear swing door and how much it annoys me, the Pajero is losing my votes - along with another dozen or so 'stupid' things it has.

I need to wait another 12 months I think - need some D4's to drop into the 50's and I'll be a happy camper......
