When one zooms out, one can see what appears to be a derelict runway just south east of the plane.

Not in a backyard but I saw this (what appears to be) derelict jet at a community airport at The Oaks, southwest of Sydney. I saw it as I rode past so had to look it up on NearMap. I know what sort of aircraft it is but I just can't think of it - possibly a Hawker Siddeley HS125. I should ride in and have a look. It looked like it was in old DCA colours.

http://www.nearmap.com/'ll=-34.081934,150.559414&z=20&t=h&nmd=20100507

Wait. I just did a search for DCA HS125 and found this:

I knew a guy with a Tiger Moth in his garage in Brisbane.

He had lost his licence for flying under the Storey Bridge and had removed the wings and it just fitted in the garage I assume until his suspension expired . It was airworthy and had been restrutted etc.
This was 40 years ago.

Young people of today probably have no idea why there is a poor facsimile of a plane doing the same thing at Minchinbury at the new(ish) housing estate.

http://www.sydneytravellersguide.com/sydimages/Minchinbury-plane.gif

Many years ago, when it was the Penfolds Minchinbury Estate winery, it was a real Avon Sabre at that location and there was a sign which read "Don't Crash, Drink Penfolds".

Reminder of the winery remain. On Gt. Western Highway. It is a replica of a Sabre Jet Fighter, erected by the winery in 1955 at the entrance to the estate. It's image was used to market the winery with the following slogan: "Don't Crash, Drink Penfolds". The original plane was destroyed in a wind storm and replaced by a replica, which was destroyed by vandals. The current plane, made of plywood and tin, is a replica of the replica.

I have a mate who has a Hawker Hart under restoration but not in his backyard, at one of his hangars at a regional airport in Qld. In the past he had a civil reg. P40 and a P51.

Hi Ron.

The aircraft at The Oaks is an HS.125 and was last operated by Qantas as a navigational and flight proficiency trainer. It was trucked in, in the mid 80's and is there to stay. Next to it is, or was about 15 years ago, a single seat ex-RAAF Vampire (Fb.9?). Anyway, the Vampire has it's nose snapped off and is lying nearby, but the Goblin engine is there to inspect....

Drop in for a look the next time you're down there, I think it's an open field for ultralights...

Matt.

Back in the late 70's Ian Mullins an ATC bloke I knew in Mt.Isa was restoring a P39 Aircobra under his high house. This was one of three recovered from Cape York with minimal damage.

I was working for DCA in 1967 and I remember the HS125 wheels up landing.
It caused quite a furore as the pilot was a pilot instructor/inspector for Air Safety Branch.

As well as discipline he would have gotten quite a ribbing.

Found some more info

VH-AEQ is stored dismantled on Alvin Petersen's property "Xanadu" in the Kamarooka* State Forest near Bendigo, Victoria. The aircraft still carries the remnants of the markings acquired when it was an advertising sign for the Aeroplane Car Company in Brisbane. The aircraft is in poor condition and for sale. (* previously shown incorrectly as Kwambatook)
Jason Burgess reports that he acquired VH-AEQ on 13MAY06. The aircraft was previously owned by David Hamilton who bought the "Xanadu" property from Alvin Petersen a few years ago. Jason confirms that the aircraft is dismantled and in poor condition. It will be moved to a farm near Swan Hill where Jason already has the cockpit of VH-SBO.

Never seen a P39 up close - would love to.

The P39 was one of those ideas that sounded like a good idea at the time. The idea was that maneuverability would be improved if the engine, as the biggest concentrated mass, was at the centre of gravity instead of in the nose, and also would give better pilot visibility. Unfortunately this applies only if all else is equal, which it manifestly was not. Compared to contemporary European aircraft (Spitfire, Hurricane, Bf109, FW190 for example), it was aerodynamically inferior, overweight, underpowered and with poor high altitude performance. In addition, being used in the Pacific thyeatre, since it was the only modern US fighter available in quantity, it was found to overheat on the ground.

Most of them were sent to the USSR as Lend-Lease as soon as they were able to be replaced. The Russians liked them, since they liked cold weather and were better than anything they had themselves.

I wonder if the Airacobra was the first trike U/C single-engined fighter? The P38 was also a trike but it was, as you are aware, a twin

Later edit: I did a search on the 'net and I see that the first fighter credited with trike is the P39 - and the P38! I shall have to check which was built first.

Even later edit: The XP38 first flew in Jan 1939 and the XP39 in April, 1939.

There is a Liberator being restored down at Werribee. I looked over it a couple of years ago.

I was annoyed with myself for losing/tossing out during a move some years back, a B24 ground crew aircraft erection manual that was about 3 inches thick.

13-odd years ago, I remember a delta wing jet (Mirage possibly?) of some sort in a suburban house in Williamstown/Altona (Melbourne). You could see it over the fence. They had built a small shed/room over the cockpit IIRC.

I think that's one of Peter Smarts(?), who was the owner of Dakota National Air. He had a few of them on his property and gradually sold them off.

I understood he owned land near Molong, so that's my guess.

I noticed that none of the pictures in the thread were winter pictures.

To provide some balance, I thought I would provide both a summer and winter picture of my Beech Musketeer; as a bonus, you also get my LR3.:D

For amusement, since it is too cold to fly, today I wanted to make a bit of a change in my CCF file but due I guess to the cold, my battery charger would not charge. It is a new fancy electronic type and would appear to be designed to be used either indoors or in the summer.

While fooling around with the charger, the cable between my laptop and the OBD plug got brittle, kind of like an icicle. I decided that all things considered, maybe the 3 was not designed to be flashed outdoors at -39C, near -40F. It would appear that I am going to have to wait a month or so til it warms up a bit.

Hence time to read forum threads and post pictures.

In the interests of a bit more balance, to complement your 'before' shots here's an 'after' shot of my (I was a passenger) Beechcraft Musketeer from waaaaaaaaay back in 1973 (I think). :D

The seven names near the bottom of the plaque may be known to some of the AULRO people. This plaque is at the local cemetery located near the Claresholm British Commonwealth Air Training Base in southern Alberta, (located about 150 km north of the US border).

Towards the bottom of the article re the link below, there are two additional pictures and a bit of a writeup as to the events surrounding the fate of the Australians airmen listed.

I was at Hamilton when they flew the Lancaster in the late '80's. This was just after it was rebuilt. I have some pretty cool VHS footage of it in formation with a Spitfire and a Hurricane.

Returned again a few months later when they put on a full airshow.

The ‘Jett-Bleu’ estate, named after John Travolta’s children, is located in the Central Florida. The 6,400 square foot mansion designed to resemble an airport terminal sits at the end of a private 1.4 mile runway.

Aviation fanatic John Travolta can literally pull his private Boeing 707 or Gulfstream Jet to his front door as seen in the images below. According to Forbes Magazine, Travolta is the only private citizen in the United States who owns a former Boeing 707. The aircraft was repainted in vintage Qantas livery.

In addition to the two plane hangers the compound also boasts a swimming pool, gym, 16 car garage, horse ranch and a mini golf course. The home cost Travolta $2.5 Million to build and was completed in 2004.
