Mine is attached to the side of the battery tray. If it is the seperate one you would just need to follow the positive cable from the battery or from the starter motor to find the solenoid as it will be somewhere in between. The other type is on the starter motor but this scenario would be more likely with a conversion. I also believe if you have a push button ignition as some earlier ones do that it can be part of this switch but don't quote me on that.

it varies.
it should be on the back of the battery tray/airfilter mount but it can also be in the same position as the "push to start" button was mounted as there is a number of solenoids that allow for electric and "push to start" operation. some starters come with one strapped to the starter so it could be there.
if its a diesel its built onto the starter motor.

i definitely want one :p
in a previous life this thing was converted to a 186 holden donk, then a 2.25 diesel now in the process of going back to original with an early 2.25 land rover petrol motor and i have had to aquire a lot of stuff like aircleaners and supports etc etc.
nearly to the point of being able to fire it up...

For 2.25 petrol, you will need one of these .. Part #13H5952L, as others have mentioned, you should find it near the battery/air filter holder.

Location?
1. Bin 06 on my shelves - I have 5 brand new ones sitting there
2. on the firewall on my 109" close to the spot where the 'push-on' ones from the earlier models lived.

With the 2.25 petrol engine the solenoid was fitted from Suffix 'D' onward (before that a direct operating push button). The solenoid is mounted on the firewall where the pushbutton is on those up to suffix 'C'.
