Just looks like someone has fitted a landy body onto a VW floorpan. Like the strange people who fit rolls royce bodies onto a monster truck or 4x4 chassis.

I love it! Light weight, classic looking roadster. I though of doing one, but based on a 2wd hilux. This gives me ideas.

Not too different from VW's own attempt to produce a bush basher...

I like the concept too, it just looks like they forgot to add suspension or something, I cant quite put my finger on it but looks incomplete......:spudnikbeanie:

I've owned a VW Country Buggy! AND a type 181!

I mortified my 2 older daughters by driving them to school in it. Later they learned to drive in it & I also used it with a 4 metre boom spray to keep the Patterson's Curse under control.

It was unique in that it had a roof that leaked like a sieve & a floor that was completely water-tight. On rainy days under brakes there was a mini-tsunami from the back that washed up to my ankles.

T'was an Australian invention from the Clayton factory that Wolfsburg observed with benign amusement. The advent of the Mini Moke killed it. When it came time for the parent factory to do the same they made the Type 181 which was a modern day reproduction of the WW2 Type 87 Wehrmacht Kubelwagen right down to the LSD. This model is known as "The Thing" in the US & was quite popular esp in sunny Hippie California. A few were imported into Oz (Type 182-RHD) & were offered to the Army. BUUUUT they were quite happy with their Series 2A's & said "Thanks, but no thanks!" Type 181's were used by several European countries & hence was known as the Nato Kubelwagen.

It was superseded by the Iltis, a very competant 4WD vehicle.

I imported a Type 181 ex Dutch army & converted it to RHD. Nice car and very useful but in its matt drab olive livery, I had to keep the lights on as ppl didn't see me that well- I jest NOT!!

eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/260966953804'ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649)

A rare & interesting vehicle!

Yes! All four doors just lift off for easy loading/unloading in the field.

It's a gen RHD (Type182) but I'm certain it's not one of the Aust Army prototypes (Type 182/M63) as it's IRS via 4 CV joints vs the old swing axles on the M/63.
What is does have is a Tropical air intake for the engine to trap dust, cyclonically I think. The system was pioneered in the Kubelwagens of Rommel's Afrika Korps!!
