Opinions on Goodyear Wrangler MTRs 235 85 16

Hi all,
Would appreciate comments from those of you running the Goodyear Wrangler MTRs 235 85 16 on your Deefers, especially with regard to off road ability, road noise and wet weather handling. Cheers.

I can't comment about them on a Deefer, but we run them on a Nissan Patrol ute which is a strike vehicle for the Rural Fire Service.

They have been brilliant. The vehicle has been driven through some of the worst country up here, and always under the worst circumstances at the time.

I would recommend them.

Fitted Wranglers to my 130 @ 40,000,nowdone 87,000 and still half tread depth. In that time have done number of trips on various road/track surfaces. One trip was to the gulf,6,000kms and never had a puncture nor tyre wall or edge tread damage on both black top and gibber gravel roads towing camper and loaded with family.

Always adjusting pressure levels for terain.

I will be replacing again with Wranglers. At the time weighed up,Wranglers, Bridgestone and Coopers. Friends with Coopers back then were having problems with edge bead tread dissappearing. Decided on Wranglers because from memory, kevlar belts in construction.

the local RFS have fitted wranglers to the tojo striker . It runs pretty well at max all up weight and they haven't damaged/blown them yet. Being run at max pressure for the case. :cool:

At least I talked them into putting Michelins on the truck.

We run them on the works cars, I've had them on the Freebee & my old D2. Currently on the lookout for a set for my RRS.

Well I might go against the grain. But I guess that is why the world is a wonderful place :p
The old MTR tread pattern was sensational & I never strayed from it once I had my first set.

The new tread pattern has nothing on the old pattern :eek: The tread design is great in straight lines, great for straight up & down hills. Outstanding in this department. It hooks up, it clears out well.
But once the new tread pattern is let loose on a slippery or even just steep side slope "it all goes down hill" (pun intended) the iner tread lugs line up laterally with the outer tread lugs with 1 only offset tread lug in the middle (I am told 2 lugs on bigger wider tyres).
We have tried many things to fix the problem, less air, more air, faster, slower. Any side slope of a nasty nature is just plain scary. Especially those greasy muddy clay types :o


So this is just my opinion of coarse. I am very disappointed, the old design was such a great all round tyre :cool: The new one just has no lateral stability in my time with them ;)

Planning on getting some steel rims to run 255/85/16s - seems to be a great tyre size for a Deefer. Just found out the new Wranglers aren't available in this size.

Looks like I'll be getting wider rims so I can fit Wranglers in 285s. Cos' I ain't planning on fitting anything other than the Wranglers any time soon given how good my current set (265/75/16) are performing.

These wranglers are the best tyres I have had on my 130 outlasted BFG and Coopers were just cut to shreads. I will buy them again

My understanding is that Goodyear Australia only imports the Wrangler MT/R Kevlar. This tyre is very different to the old Wrangler MTR that I suspect most of you are running. The older style is still available in some o/s markets and is an optional fitment for some Defenders. Goodyear makes great claims about the MT/R Kevlar and the reviews I have read of the tyre are largely very positive. The tread design is asymmetric:

That photo of the new kevlar mtr explains what I was trying to put in words about the tread pattern.

If the old style is still available, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it :)

As an aside I just fitted 245/75 R16 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs (the AT) to the missus' Prado. I just completed a run to Brisbane and back, towing on the return leg.

Being picky they are slightly noisy (the normal 'hum') however I found that they grip brilliantly on all surfaces, regardless of wet or dry. I am yet to try them in anger off-road at this stage, however I am more than happy with them.

I imported them from America, but they are no different to the ones sold locally.
