Gday All,

Just drove down to Victor Harbour towing the camper trailer, and fueled up only once in Alice springs.

Had the D3 and it has 190ltrs with the 2 tanks, plus carried 40ltrs on the trailer, which I didnt really need.
Darwin - Alice 175ltrs
Alice -Victor Harbour 180ltrs

Sat on 110km/h most of the way.:D:D:D

Came down with a friend towing a 18ft pop-top van with a 150 prado, who averaged 19ltr/100kms.. needless to say how ****ed off he was when he had to keep stopping for fuel.

He is taking the Prado back to toyota to find out why it used so much fuel, as it only has 30,000ks on it and he is not happy with those figures.

Lovin the D3

Cheers Ean

A very good mate took his brand new 2011 prado back to the Toyota dealership around the corner from home. He through the keys at them and demanded his 2008 prado to be given back. His economy was significantly worse, the car was slower, and on two occasions it would not start. Unfortunately for him the old one went to a new home.

From what I have heard this is not an isolated case.

Yep D4-D 3.0l deisel..

Was surprised myself to see how bad it was. He also blew a 18'tyre and had transmission problems, so the toyota wasn't in the good books.

According to my trip computer I am currently getting 13L/100 out of my 05 TDV6. I don't thrash it at all so I would love to know how everyone achieves these fantastic fuel figures they keep reporting. Towing a 2.5T van it gets around 22L/100. EGR has been modded, it hasn't been chipped and the MAF & MAP sensors have cleaned. The tyres of course are MTZ but I think they would account for an extra 2L/100.

Gee awesome fuel economy by the D3 and with such a large capacity your range is brilliant. As for the Prado very ordinary , but sounds like run of the mill for one of them towing, as my 2003 manual, 3 litre turbo Hi-Lux gets down as low as 5 kays per litre when towing a series Landy. It will be interesting to see how the Prado goes towing back up "the hill" to Darwin if it's economy was that poor coming down hill. ;)

Cheers, Mick

I found that if I did between 80-90km/h the car would hunt between 5th & 6th gear and rev between 1700 & 2300 rpm. When I say on 110km/h in 6th gear 1600 -1700 rpm the car just cruised and hence the economy.

I have no roofrack, standard tyre's and the car is standard except fot long range tank, and snorkle.

The camper weighs in at about 1200kgs.

I lock mine in 6th gear to prevent this.

Funny - I keep finding my D4 2.7 hangs on too long, so I'm forever using command to shift down before all momentum is lost...

There's some threads about economy, but 13's aren't super bad for stop-start city driving...

I have to admit that over the last week or so there has been a bit of that because of the Christmas shopping. But our general driving too and from the shops is mostly 80kph, although it is a bit on the hilly side. I'm going to look at getting different tyres anyway as I'm not overly impressed with the Mickey Thompson MTZ for general travel and towing. Great off road but I won't be taking two sets of tyres when we set off around Oz.

I'll check to see if I can find the threads on economy.

Your D3 has roughly around 33's MTZ's on it from memory which would knock the edge off of it when towing a decent size van or even for stop start city driving.

Mine with 31.5" STT's towing our 2.5 ton pop top is averaging about 18.5 ltrs /100. I tend to drive at the speed limit and briskly mind you, if you drive at 90 to 100 kph like most vanners do then your economy will improve, also remember much taller tyres means your speedo isn't accurate. With larger then standard 31.5" tyres fitted a D3's speedo is nearly 100 perecnt accurate.

Towing a camper at speed is easy for a D3, the roof line of the camper is below the vehicles roof line and it weighs bugger all in comparision to a van. Not sure why the guy with the Prado was upset with 19 litres/100, sounds about right when towing a van twice the size of a camper, he is dragging a big box through the air while the much smaller camper is hiding behind the D3. I bet if Ean and him swapped trailers for a couple of hundred k's and stayed at 110 kph then the results would be quite different.

cheers,
Terry

Pretty close Terry. They are just under 32" and checking the speedo with the GPS it is pretty much dead on. I'll need to work out how to use the "Calibrate" function on the Touch Screen when I change the tyres. I think I just use the kilometers selection and start driving.

Darwin - Alice 175ltrs
Alice -Victor Harbour 180ltrs

So if we assume 1500 km Darwin to Alice (from Google Maps), that's 11,7 litres/100km

and

Alice-Victor Harbor (no "u" in Victor Harbor  ) is 1630km. that's 11.04 litres/100km.

Pfft! My Rangie will easily do 30 litres/100km when towing a van! :D

Absolutely correct with the spelling Ron. Very impressive for a New South Welshman. ;)

Good to hear you had a safe and uneventful trip down Ean. We are day tripping to Middleton on 2 Jan. Will you still be at Victor then?

Funny isn't it, when I looked at your D3 when it was for sale many months ago it appeared to have much larger tyres then 31.6's. I guess being 265's made them look much larger then they were.

Dunno - think its just a compromise to stop too much of the afore-mentioned gear hunting, especially when towing. Sport mode kicks back better...
