Series 3 parts on a series 2a

Hay guys im going to be picking up half a series 3 (yes i mean half, cut through the chassis) to try and get some parts of it!

I was wondering if the ute roof, windows and doors etc would fit my 2a they have different brackets on the doors but they look like they are in the right place. will any of these parts fit?

Oh and whatever i dont use including a 202 will be eventually put up for sale if anyone has any requests

Almost all parts are interchangeable between Series 2,2a and 3. Of the parts you mention, the only significant difference is the door checks are different on 2/2a and 3; you can use either , but you will have to improvise either the door fitting or the bulkhead fitting. Windscreen frames are not interchangeable, but the glass is the same. All other windows are the same.

In general, the only significant differences apart from obvious ones such as the headlight position, dashboard and wheel studs are the progressive change from British to unified threads (and to metric on late S3), and continuous detail changes. But most of these changes do not coincide with the change from Series 2-2a-3. And in almost all cases, you can swap assemblies if not individual bits.

As an example, my 2a is fitted with alternator, distributor, doors, seats and cab from a Series 3, adjustable seat and bonnet from Series 2 with spare wheel carrier from Series 3 and hinges and hold down bolts from Series 2.

From what I recall the 88" never had a Salisbury rear diff and it would not fit without modifying the prop shaft and that'd create issues with binding in the uni joints because of the more acute angles.

Front diff- no problems.

As the others note - everything is pretty much the same forward of the bulkhead behind the seats. Differences that are worth noting are that standard trim levels differed and the standard 109 front springs are heavy duty 88 front springs. Most Series 3 front axles differed between the 109 and 88 in that the 109 had 24 spline drive flanges and outer drive axles to match the rear with a salisbury axle. Late Series 3 88s had 24 spline ones front and rear. Brakes on the 109 use 11" rather than 10" drums, and these are worth fitting to an 88, but make sure you know what you are doing (see other threads on the subject), and these have a different master cylinder.

Another thing to watch is if the donor vehicle is originally a six. If it is, the bulkhead, front prop shaft and a few other bits and pieces are different to fit the longer engine.

Also note that while the Series 2a and 3 gearboxes are interchangeable, the clutch slave cylinder is on the opposite side, so you have to also swap the piping for it.

Six and four, petrol or diesel have identical gearboxes (for the same year) and subject tot the above, all are interchangeable. There are preferences as to which box you use, mainly because of durability concerns.

what im gettng it for is

1. the brakes and masters which im just going to switch over
2. ute roof etc (rear bulkhead it attaches to may be a problem then?)
3. it has a salsbury but he cut off the chassis behind the cab andcut the axles out the rear diff so i may not be able to use it
4. the doors which will need some changing on the brackets
5. possibly the gearbox as its synchro but thats only if i have problems with the whole double clutch thing
6. the hubs on the front if they fit (selectro)

my 88 currently has no brake lines as i was doing the brake upgrade which means i can use the masters and set up the dual circuit.
unfortunately it doesnt have seat so im still stuck on that one.

If the rear bulk head is different will the roof fit to mine? if i need to change anything what do i need to change?

The roof should fit; the back-of-the-cab panel with windows will fit the roof, but on the 88" a spacer panel needs to be fitted to close a gap with the seat bulkhead.

I suggest fitting both and then making an aluminium panel to fit, if you can't find a second-hand one,

to fit a series 3 gearbox in a series 2/2a chassis you will need to remove a piece of reinforcing steel from the bellhousing crossmember to clear the clutch slave cylinder (just a web to cut away)
