Hi all,
A Job change meant a relocation to Adelaide, so after all the preparation for the past 3 months with schools and housing etc we set off at 6am Christmas Day (1 week after all our chattels left). Lucky to miss the hail in Melbourne for sure.
Gotta say the old 99 V8 D2 didn't miss a beat and had us arriving at 3.30pm. Good fuel economy too, ..for a V8
Looking forward to different 4WD experiences and meeting some locals from the AULRO site over here.
What a beautiful Country we live in, as an ex-Pom and having been here for 22 yrs. now, this place amazes me every time I make the effort go out that bit further from the main cities.

Setting out.........

Welcome!
a few things to try:-
farmers union iced coffee
(SA is the only place in the world where flavoured milk outsells coke!)
villis pies
a pie floater (the latter at night the better :) )
--
also we have "deli's" (not milk bars- a milk bar is a white chocolate)
we turn right from the centre lane (if you hook turn, someone will likely hook you!)
we wear "bathers" not cossies or swimmers
and we have the best beer (coopers!)
welcome, enjoy and when youve settled you have a lot of state to explore,
the flinders, arkaroola, simpson desert, oodna track, west coast (some fantastic country for camping esp in summer!)
hope that you and the family love it!

You will enjoy the layout of the road system... Maybe.
Check to see if the 40km/h speed limit applies 24/7, 365 days around school zones. - Great little money-spinner !
And some of the kerbs and tight roundabouts are diabolical :twisted:

He is right!
our road layout is crazy, we have signs indicating our major roads BEFORE the road so you have time to turn etc, unlike Melb where theyre on the flamin road you are looking !!:p
the speed limit for kids is right, anytime (24/7) there is a child on footpath in these areas you MUST do 40...it could be very expensive :( (in more ways than one) if you dont!!!!:nazilock:
---still we can't complain.... we dont have Eddie "MILLYONAIR" Maguire :D

Haha yep all of the above. They speak different over here too! Watch out for stobie poles as they bend unlike telegraph poles, I am a total convert to farmers union iced coffee too! Mad stuff!!!! Enjoy your change of lifestyle to SA, I have and been here from Sydney 10 years now.

I always thought school zones were 25, and applied for ANY pedestrian, not just kids.

Available in Melbourne (thank god).
villis pies
Again, available in Melbourne but sadly Balfours pies (and frog cakes) are not.
a pie floater (the latter at night the better :) )
From "the pie cart" mmmmm........
also we have "deli's" (not milk bars- a milk bar is a white chocolate)
we turn right from the centre lane (if you hook turn, someone will likely hook you!)
we wear "bathers" not cossies or swimmers

Also available in Melbourne. The stout is the best.

Hmm, Better wade through this lot of Legalese and Obscurity... Seems you can have a 'school-hours' only School Zone. Or not. Speed in a school zone can be whatever is on the sign...

Thanks for the welcome and advice on Iced Coffee, water, school speed zones, pies and stuff.
Were living at Henley Beach and have been down the the beach every morning, and we've all caught a fish since arriving so no one has missed out. Family love it here so far, which has made it a bit easier on us after leaving great friends behind in Melbourne. As the "honeymoon" period ends I hope they still feel the same.
Thanks
Simon

Way to many, was a bit of a wild one as a kid and had many big nights and a villis cafe around the corner

Great area, although in "Launnie" at the moment I do miss Adelaide at times.
One of the checks before relocating to Tassie was that FU was available here.. (Farmers Union... keep it clean boys :) )
x2 the west coast, fantastic area especially if you like fishing. Some great rates can be had on holiday units at coffin bay from time to time, the camping is good too.

Welcome to the great state of wine & whining, Simon....
You do develop a taste for the water. Just remember, if it needs to be cut with a knife, then leave it for a bit...
There is much to love about Adelaide, but if you dont hate the traffic yet, wait until school goes back.... We lived in Melbourne for a couple of years, and I still miss being able to drive on freeways to get where we needed.
Oh, and if you hear of a thing called the Southern Expressway, just ignore it. It is really just a big ramp for skateboarders & cyclists...

How long you been in Adelaide? You've not got a rain water tank yet?

A year ago I drove through Adelaide peak hour traffic from the northern burbs straight down South Road through the southern burbs towing a tandem. An easier drive than getting into Melbourne CBD from the west. Don't ask about my nightmares driving in Melbourne's east. Adelaide traffic is a doddle. Just don't drive like Adelaide drivers.
Oh, and if you hear of a thing called the Southern Expressway, just ignore it. It is really just a big ramp for skateboarders & cyclists...
Great bit of road. I use it often (was on it yesterday). Just got to get the timing right.
As with everything, one's perspective changes the experience.
Oh, and Amscol ice cream. Whatever happened to that? It was the best.

I love Adelaide. Never lived there but done quite a few trips for work. Like a big country town!
I recall staying in a large city hotel, sign on the door said..."Time to airport 15 mins - allow 20 during peak times!" :lol2:. Traffic is a breeze.
Yeah water is crap, buy bottled & get a tank.
Footy teams are crap too but you can still barrack for a Melbourne team. :wasntme:
Dont tell me you have been here for 22 years and you dont follow AFL.:mad:
P.S. Best Australian beer comes from Tassie! :p

I always thought school zones were 25, and applied for ANY pedestrian, not just kids.
Oops, BRAIN FART!! it is 25, it has always been 25.... I dont know what I was doing when I typed that!!
The 25 rules applies to any child (ie anyone under OR APPEARING TO BE UNDER 18 years) anywhere on either footpath (accompanied or not). YOU MUST DO 25. that applies 24/7 x 365 & a 1/4!
This came about because there used to be "25kmph between (this hour and that) on school days" and a bloke hit a kid whilst he was travelling at 60 (in a 25 zone) and as he had no children got off serious charges as he stated he thought it was school holidays (which was obvious because in school holidays kids in school uniform flock to the schools to play??!!) so they said stuff it there is no confusion if it applies 24/7
The school zones that are between times are usually those with flashing 25 lights (yep, 25 not 40 !!)
