Does any one have a recommendation for a 'mass' produced ladder/step to access the roof rack area for a defender.
Like this is what I'm after, (although this one may or may not be 'mass' produced).

Looking at getting one prior to my next trip.

Hannibal and Wind Cheetah make an alloy one, ARB haas a steel one. Lots to choose from.

The Hannibal only requires holes to be drilled at the bottom as it clamps to the roof gutter unlike the other.

Mulhouse probably does one as well

We fit 110 Rear Ladders on a regular basis, mostly as a full package when someone purchases a rack. We can supply as stand alone part if required, PM me for further details.

The Wind Cheetah (imported by Dolium) also clamps to the roof gutter. You can see the clamp on these advertising photos:

Also note the bottom step which bolts on using existing holes in the rear cross member.

Same as the Hannibal set up, the Hannibal ladder is more streamed lined, and the chassis step looks to be better than this one.

Martyn, I built mine myself out of 20mm RHS steel, but it is bolted to the roof rack at the top as I think, that if the rack is not on I don't need the ladder.
It is a full length one that bolts to the grab handle on the chassis. It does obstruct the number plate a little bit but in 36 years of landies and traveling all have been the same. I have never been booked although do take it off when I get home. The good part of bolting it to the rack is that you don't have to drill holes through the body with the associated problems. I have a bender for square tube and I rolled the top where it attaches to the rack and looks ok. I have had no structural problems with it attached to the rack. You might see a shot of it in those photos I sent you.
Lindsay.

Patriot Roofracks in the UK do 2 different ladders, both aluminium and can be powder coated.

They do a "Rack to Chassis" ladder and a "Gutter to chassis" ladder.

Both use existing holes on the cross member, the gutter-chassis clamps to the gutter whereas the rack-chassis is designed to bolt straight onto the patriot racks.

Not cheap but I'd say the Rolls Royce of Roofracks.

We fitted an Opposite Lock ladder.
Very similar to the Hannibal post above.
Very happy with it.

We've had the Dolium one fitted. There's a bit of a step between the 1st (seperate) step and the top 3, but you get used to that pretty quickly.

We returned yesterday from 3 weeks on the road, setting up and packing up camp each day, which involved numerous climbs to the roof rack (full-size rack with nearly full-size bag, full of the lighter, bulkier gear). No problems at all.

We got a LR full-length ladder that bolts to the rear cross-member thingy using the two existing torx (is that the name?) bolts. The top off the ladder is attached via two rivunut thingos - though i just used ten mm bolts and nuts and washers as I coul;dn't figure out the rivunut.

The mob at Graheme Cooper in Sydney thought it was illegal as in their oppinion it partially covers the wider Australian rego plates. I didn't think so as it was avaiable from LR as a genuine accessory. And the good NT MVR don't have an issue.

As for practical - it's the ducks nuts. You can't beat it and the aftermarket ones IMHO are are bit silly with the rungs being half way up the truck already. With the LR ladder you can safely climb up from the rear bar. I can find some pictures if it helps.

This is a picture of the Patriot Roofrack Rear ladders. The left hand on has a space for a UK number plate, the right hand side one doesnt.

The reason I mention it is because I have one of the left hand style ladders on my 110 and used to have my number plate in the standard position...

PC Plod decided to stop me within a few hours of me driving around Sydney and promptly told me it was illegal and to remove the ladder. I politely pointed out that it was integral to the roofrack (my 110 being a double cab) so he said then move the number plate onto the wheel carrier.

So (in NSW anyway), whilst the full length ladder is not illegal in itself, if it obsures any part of the number plate, it becomes illegal.

Id agree with above though, the full length ladders and MUCH better than the two part efforts and for most, relocating the number plate is easy enough.
