View Full Version : Weird wiring issue

I know of someone with a RRS with a weird wiring issue.

He has put a charge cable for his trailer from battery through to a 12 pin plug. Power is coming directly from the battery, and body earth is being used. It's live at the plug, but no power goes to the van unless the headlights are on. It's got me beat.

Yep! that's weird. :oops2:

Read up on kirchhoff's law

That extra wiring needs three things to prevent a possible fire!
A fuse at the battery, a means of disconnecting that lead when starting ( a NC relay in line ) and a decent earth cable between the RRS's chassis and the trailer chassis.

It sounds like someone has made a mistake on the plug wiring end, where the +ve wire is in the wrong spot & the lighting circuit is in the spot the permanent power should be.

If the +ve wire from the battery can be tested find what pin it is in & then re-wire if required.

Cheers

He has all that apparently.

That makes sense. I will tell him to check that.

Hi

Have a look at this link.

Apart from anything else, it also sounds just like the person has NOT split the twin(left/right)park light outputs described in Sniegy's excellent trailer electric brakes wiring "how to" thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/97935-d4-electric-trailer-brakes.html which would explain why only getting power on one pin when the lights were on ...

Was this the same situation also asked about on the expandaownersaustralia Yahoo Group?

Regards,

Les.

Hi les,it was the same scenario.

He found that it was not wired correctly by LR. Two wires were the wrong way around. LR were employed to install the larger 12 pin.

I hope a simple mix up of the wires in the trailer socket, is all that problem turns out to be.

Not for discussion here but to say, if a diode that has been fitted into the head light circuit, then there is a possibility that the diode is biased on when the headlights are switched on, then a accidental reverse current flow in a wire could occur.

Then take that the rig to an authorised auto electrician, as those sorts of DIY induced faults, do step over the line of what is a fair topic to discuss on this forum IMHO.

see link for DRL

Diode Logic Gates (http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/electronic/diodgate.html)

I could delve into this problem deeper, but without some hands on measurement giving some meaningful feedback, then it is all guess work with confusion the end result. :soapbox:

He is taking back to land rover seeing as though they wired it the wrong way around.
