I have a few computers on my home network running windows7.

I am trying to set up the downstairs one to stream windows media centre from the main one so that i can watch tv.

When I try to set up the extender it asks me for an 8 digit number.

Is this the wep key/wpa password or something else ?

If it is, I dont know what they are. If I log into the router can I find them ?

Do you enter a password when you log onto your network? If so, try that. Your network password is usually visible when you log into the router.

No it logs on automatically. Might have to head upstairs and work out the ip address of the router and check it out

What happens if something screws up and you need to log on manually or if you want to add, say, access by a smartphone? You don't have the password?

IP address of the router? Try 192.168.1.1 (that's a typical address for a Netgear router). If that doesn't work, try Googling the router name/model and IP address.

Logon: Try user id Admin and the same for the password. Again, a search of the 'net will give you the default logon and password (assuming yours hasn't been changed).

IIRC its like pairing Bluetooth devices...

The other device at the other end needs the same number added to 'pair'

to create an extender you need to go into the extender settings in windows media centre on the main PC which will give you the code required
after that you connect all other computers using windows media centre and the code

windows centre can be a bit difficult to use for Home Theatre PCs
try looking at XBMC as it plays more file types, requires no codecs and it just works much better
If your rather tech savvy MythTV is even better but a reasonable knowledge of Linux is needed

oh and xbmc's network discovery is simple so connecting Mac, PC or smart devices is easy

Thanks for that. I tried going into Tasks>Settings>Extender and the only thing there was the function to set up an extender and it needs that 8 digit number. Might give up on that for now.

Downloaded xbmc, but it doesn't support pvr , so have to download extra programs like myth or media portal. Might look into when I have a bit more spare time.

Apple TV with Air Video Server running on a PC is excellent and very easy to set up. I think you need an ipod, iphone or ipad to actually remote control it though. Converts just about any format on the fly and plays wirelessly into the Apple TV box then into the HDMI port of the big screen TV.
