View Full Version : Tassie in a tent

6th January 2012, 10:00 PM
Currently travelling around Oz, and plan to hit Tassie in the next fortnight or so for about 4-6 weeks. I'm contemplating leaving the small offroad van behind and roughing it with just the lift-off camper canopy (inbuilt kitchen and Coleman HWOD, Oztent and swags, etc). This means saving about $800 for the ferry fares, and a fair saving on fuel.

The basic idea was find a few basecamp locations as possible and head out on day-trips. I'm interested to hear feedback on this idea, particularly feasibilty regarding temperature and possible campsites.

Can you explain your plan a bit more?
I don't really understand.

**edit** I re-read this morning and it makes fine sense now.

Feb and March are the best time of the year to camp in a tent specially on the east coast.
I am moving to Tasmania (again) at the end of this month, I like the place :)

Heading over tomorrow for 2 weeks in the fender. We will be tenting it most of the way. We intend on doing a bit of four wheeling on the way round. Will report back soon. If anyone sees us say g'day. Silver puma, well setup with Hannibal rack

Temp will be ok.

Sawgs for 4 to 6 weeks? Swags maybe ok for the overnighter on the trip away from base camp.

Lots of friendly people in Tassie,, and a couple of base camps puts the rest in easy reach.
Hope this part is mechanically uneventful;):p:D

Hey mate just got back from camping on the east coast been away since boxing day, and a couple of weeks before christmas was down the west coast. A tent or swag is fine for temp, especially from mid november through to mid march. Any time other than then is also fine but you will require a warm sleeping bag! I always pack one for if the weather turns southerly (as it did on wednesday night!) as southerly winds and weather bring cold temps to 5 degrees at night. Its the best way to see Tas and there really is some awesome camping spots where you can nearly have the place to yourself. I will post some of our trip for you soon!:)

Yes Ryan - leave the van behind. If weather turns really foul then you've got $800 up your sleeve, some of which you could spend an a few days in a rented cabin or the like.

Check out the Parkes Tasmania website for about 25 suggested 4WD tracks and make sure you do the Mt McColl one into the SW Wilderness - easy drive into some absolutely beautiful country the likes of which you won't see anywhere else in Tassie.

Looking forward to following more of your adventures.

I have a selection of paddocks that are empty, anyone that wants a camping spot for a couple of days whilst exploring the surrounding area, give me a hoy.

My place is 35 minutes travel time, north of Hobart and in the middle of trips that take about an hour and a half to places like, Port Arthur, Maydena, Great Lake and Orford.

PM for details if you need a freebie camp spot.

Good to see the old Land Rover Camaraderie alive and well.

I'm sure your generous offer will be appreciated by fellow AULROians and that you'll very likely meet some interesting and friendly people.

Well, looks like the tent idea is on. Keen to catch up with any Tassie members, and would love to know any recommended camping spots. I plan to spend about 4-6 weeks on the island, so should have plenty of time to get around.

Would love to head offroad, also!

Freycinet National Park (http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=412#fre) is one of my favorite spots together with the Bay of Fires (http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=3999)

Remember to get the National Parks passes (http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=914). You can have one that cover all the NP in Tasmania.
Chances are that you can get it in the Spirit of Tasmania information office.
Have a safe trip.

I can recomend Cosy corner south ( I think that's what its called) at the Bay of fires, and Friendly beaches at Freycinet NP. The animals are very friendly there.
We spent two weeks at the start of November doing Tas in the Oz tent. We loved it. I should really do a trip report.......

Cheers

Hello from Hobart.
Please to be sure to go down to Cockle creek.
Free camping, No park pass required, Only facilities are drop loo,s.
Need to be self sufficient.
Whilst there 4x4 into Southport Lagoon.
If you intend to travel to the far south of Tassie a parks pass is required for the last K or so before you get to the Bronze Pilot whale statue that is the furthest southern point of Tasmania.
I have retired from work but not from life so feel free to drop me a line or txt.

Have attached a couple of pics from my new years camping in Cockle creek.
You are going to love tassie.:D

Yes Ryan, Oz tent it in Tassie, we did on our second trip, and your vehicle is set up for it too;)

Where Arthur lives is a central spot for day trips etc:)

Don't forget to head over to the West Coast, lovely camping and terrific beach driving.

You get your parks pass on the spirit of T on the way over.

And Tasmanians hold great BBQ's:D

Don't let the name turn you off. Dismal Swamp is in the NW of Tassie and IMHO is well wort a visit.
All the 'billy lids' - including the older ones) will enjoy the slide and the 'characters' around the walk at the bottom.

Hello from Brisbane - but in a former life was once a resident of the south island.

As people are suggesting there really is a lot to see and do in the Apple Isle.

Probably I might suggest the road from Corinna-Pieman River to either Arthur River or Smithton on the West Coast that takes in a bit of the Tarkine Wilderness. Nice easy drive and no longer as wild as it once might have been.

In the Huon Valley there are plenty of wild trips, which a few people have suggested, but the Tahune Forest Airwalk and Hartz Ranges NP west of Geeveston are well worth the side detour even though it is a tar road all or most of the way (the bakery in Geeveston does a pretty good pie as a bonus).

Finally, if you decide to take in Lakes Gordon or Pedder, the relatively short side trip on the forestry roads to the Styx River and Valley of the Giants a little to the east of Maydena is worth pursuing - tallest hardwood tree in the world is among the various attractions (for what it is worth the Hartz Ranges - above - has the heaviest tree). The Wilderness Society lays claims to highlighting all of this, but oddly enough all the facilities and signage seem to have been provided by Forestry Tasmania......

Anyway, that's just a few small options. Enjoy yourself.

Cheers,

saiken

Don't forget if your current van arragement doesn't work out for this part of your trip give us a ring.
Your more than welcome to leave it at our place if it suits while you island hop.
We can even plug it in if you need a few days in it first.

Make sure you visit Jackman and Mackinross bakery at Hampden Rd Battery Point..yummy :). First place I head when in Hobart.

Elephant Pass Pancakes on the A4 near St Mary's is also a winner.

Lots of great campsites as mentioned. I would also suggest Mt Field National Park. For caravan park camping its hard to go past Longford caravan park which is good base for exploring Launcestion. Also Mole Creek C.P. The C.P. at Richmond is also handy for Hobart.

If you like history I suggest heading across to Maria Island. I think you can stay on the Island in basic bunkhouses.

You forgot to mention The House of Anvers (http://www.anvers-chocolate.com.au/about.html) by far the best chocolats in Australia and just few km down the road to Hobart from Devonport :)
And once you are in Hobart try the apple schnapps in the destillery (http://www.larkdistillery.com.au/our_products/overview.php).

Hi. When on the West coast 2 must does are: Montazuma Falls just sth. of Roseberry & The Spray Tunnel at Zeehan. Also if you are going to use caravan parks on west coast, most are extremely rocky.
Regards Shane.

Day 3 in Tassie and living it. Although a tad chilly.

Thought I would share the coords for a fantastic campsite we found up on the bay of fires. It would be perfect as a base camp exploring the area:

It is on the banks of the big lagoon:

Or

Currently at Coles bay going round anti clockwise

We leave Melbourne Sunday - maybe the next weekend after might be good?

BTW - any recommendations for a good overnight camp when we get off the boat at Devonport?

Hey mate pretty sure I'll be heading away this weekend.

More than likely be Eddeystone Point

Send me a PM and we can trade numbers

Same goes if anyone likes paddock camping, the old man has 120 acres half hour out of Launceston. Just out of Exeter

Sing out and I may be able to T something up with him
