Today I was driving my defender 130 along the freeway at about 110kph and it died, I coasted to a stop, My wife towed me home with her landcruiser, you can hear the fuel pump run but now when you crank it it fires for a second and stops, It seems to have fuel pressure if you undo the fuel filter drain and turn on the ignition it sprays out , any Idears ? what I should check first Thanks

Check for oil at the ecu as oil will interfere with sensors such as the crankshaft posiiton sensor.

Have the ECU interrogated by way of Nanocom or similar (LR diagnostics), revealing your location typically evokes help offers from owners of these gadgets.

It does sound like a dodgy CKP though.

Tried replacing fuel filter? Is the MIL illuminated?

check the codes,, and hope you dont have 'top side switch' failed

Hi If you dont have nanocom then try the crank possition sensor, The TD5 will run with every sensor disconnected except this one,
when you crank is the red light in the speedo lit, it sounds as if the engine is immobolised they do fire once then do nothing.
Good luck

Hmmm - pretty rare for a CPS (Crank Position Sensor) to allow the engine to actually fire and then stop. Normally if the CPS is U/S - you can crank the engine for as long as the battery will allow and it won't start.....

Did you happen to turn the lights, wipers or any other electrical component on just before the engine died while you were driving?

Sorry for not getting back sooner but ive been away, Its going again I checked fuel return for pressure It had heaps, then I unpluged engine wiring cleaned and put back, and Its been fine since, but I dont realy trust it at the moment as I didnt find anything, have only done about 600klm since, Thanks for all your input, hope I can put this problem to bed but im not sure yet, cheers

Cant believe it but driving along the same bit of road as the first time it stopped, it did it again, It happens just after pulling up a 1 klm long hill at about 100kph then leveling for another 400 metres still going fine on light throttle then nothing, I tried to start it fires for a second then stops, checked fuel return at engine end it had heaps still wont start, then disconnected battery and reconnected still wont start, then unplug ed wiring to front of head and reconnected and away it went again so this time my wife didn't have to tow me home with her landcruiser, Hmm What could it be, Thanks Bruce

Does the engine malfunction indicator come on when this happens? (the yellow engine symbol in the dash)

get you injector seals and washer done, this is exactly what happened to my D2 TD5. Also get the loom checked to.

if your in Brisbane MR Automotive are the best, they are in Kipper Ring.

Thanks I had the head off about 20000klm ago and did the seals and washers then, have done continuity check on engine bay wiring, Its going to be a tricky one I think, cheers

A continuity check has very limited use. It will identify a circuit that won't work but won't identify one that will.
The circuit really needs to be loaded while you look for a voltage drop.

Not advising against doing the check but to be aware of it's limitations.:)

Also as a side note, as I'm not sure if it applies to the TD5 (someone may correct this), many engine management systems don't always log a code for a CA sensor failure. Thats partially to do with the fact the PCM doesn't see a signal from the sensor so it assumes the engine has stopped rotating - therefore no need to log a code.

I have had similar symptoms in my 03 130, turned out to be the crank angle sensor was knackered.
Cost about $500 to fix for a 2 finger size part.

Also just recently bad fuel had introduced black snot into the fuel pump and was chocking it, but you'll hear a loud wining sound if that was the case.

It sounds like the injector harness is full of oil. You cleaned the connections then refitted and it started, is a clue to the diagnoses.

After climbing a hill and having the engie stop I would still suspect injector washers. Is the pump noisy iE sound like it needs priming when you go to start it again?

Yeh But the wiring very clean its not an oily mess like my discovery was, just hit it with some contact cleaner cause I had it apart, It dose seem to be where the problem is because the 2 times it played up unplugging and replugging the injector wire harness made it start, Ive been going up that hill every day this week heading home so far so good, thanks for the input wish it would stop for good then I would know when its fixed, cheers

JC The fuel pump was running quite as normal and when I loosened the filter drain beside the road it sprayed out with heaps of pressure, cheers

Have you checked the red plug at the ecu.
