 Looks like the lay shaft bearings are screwed in my defender. At 127 k that is a surprise to me.
Is it normal?Could having the engine chiped over load the gbox?
I've grounded the thing untill MR can sort it out in a week or so and will get the clutch etc checked out at the same time.
Till then I will be down to driving the quattro.:wasntme:

Probably help to know which model/box, although with that mileage it is presumably a Puma. I know nothing about that box, but the increased power from chipping will certainly increase load on the box, assuming you use the power. This should only affect the layshaft bearings in the indirect gears.

Hi Doug
I was told by a chap who has about the same year puma as yours ( 'L' suffix ), that he had trouble with his gearbox and as he is a mechanic, he looked at the cause.
What he told me was worrying, as he found the strainer blocked by the silicon which is used to seal the joints of the gearbox casings.
It appears that when he changed to a synthetic gearbox oil, it has washed the excess silicon from the inside of the box, the silicon then has blocked the strainer to the oil pump.
My layshaft bearings ( 'J' suffix ) are also very noisy and I did also changed to a synthetic oil, I wont know more until I pull that box down.

Time will tell I guess.
Thing is that I'm heading off to South Australia and then to Perth around october, so better now than then.
Ya can't break em if you don't have them.

GrumpyDoug, I know this is an old post, but am wondering if you ever got to the bottom of the issue and had any insights? A few other members have pointed to layshaft bearings as the cause of a recent issue I'm having with my '08 110. Thanks mate.
