iTunes, why are some of my songs greyed out?

But also it can be because itunes cant locate the original folder, ie the original folder/file for that music has not been stored in itunes...

In my case i store all my music on a portable hard drive and if its not plugged in then itunes cant find it, even sometimes when the hard drive is plugged in I still have to locate the original files...

are they your songs?

if purchased from another account from itunes store that is not linked to yours it may be greyed out as it is not authorized for your account.

All mine purchased on the same computer....so why x amount of songs??
